The posting

Release Train Engineer – Merchant Delivery

Contract duration: 12 months

Location: Cape Town

Role purpose:

The Business Payments Agile Release Train (ART) delivers digital payment solutions and value-added business services that enable merchants and businesses to accept payments across multiple channels. These solutions may include smartphone applications across Android and iOS, international payment and remittance capabilities, and business tools that support merchants and agents.

The role translates agreed product priorities into an integrated delivery plan, with clear milestones, dependencies, resource requirements and release commitments. It manages execution from discovery and planning through development, integration, testing, market readiness, launch and post-launch stabilisation.

Working within the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe), the Release Train Engineer (RTE) is responsible for facilitating ART processes and supporting effective execution across multiple teams. This includes managing impediments, escalating risks where necessary, enabling value delivery and driving continuous improvement within the ART and across its teams.

The RTE will also support the Lean-Agile transformation to the target operating model by coaching leaders, teams and Scrum Masters and fostering an agile mindset.

Success in this role means delivering reliable, scalable payment and merchant capabilities at pace, with the technical, operational and market readiness required to support adoption and business value.

  • Manage delivery within agreed tolerances and escalate changes requiring product, budget or governance approval.

3. Improve Flow

  • Manage and optimise the flow of value through the ART by continuously evaluating delivery practices associated with DevSecOps and Release on Demand.
  • Provide input on resource requirements to address critical bottlenecks.
  • Identify and manage risks, remove impediments and ensure mitigation plans are implemented.

  • Escalate and track impediments through to resolution.
  • Facilitate ART synchronisation events, System Demos and Inspect and Adapt workshops.
  • Ensure effective vendor management and alignment with delivery commitments.
  • Provide delivery analysis and progress updates to support informed decision-making and continuous improvement.
  • Coordinate pilots, phased deployments, go-live decisions and post-launch stabilisation.

6. Encourage Innovation

  • Establish delivery pathways for experiments, proofs of concept and pilots alongside committed roadmap activities.
  • Support the Lean User Experience (UX) innovation cycle.
  • Encourage regular innovation and exploration cycles to improve return on investment and customer satisfaction in line with SAFe principles.

7. Drive Continuous Improvement

  • Drive continuous improvement through Inspect and Adapt workshops, assessing the ART's agility and identifying opportunities to improve.
  • Foster Communities of Practice and encourage engineering excellence and Built-In Quality practices.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
