Job Description

The Product Engineer is responsible for the design, development, validation, improvement, and lifecycle support of commercial and industrial door systems, including rolling steel doors, fire-rated doors, counter doors, security grilles, and/or high-performance doors.

Responsibilities

Basic Function

The Product Engineer is responsible for the design, development, validation, improvement, and lifecycle support of commercial and industrial door systems, including rolling steel doors, fire-rated doors, counter doors, security grilles, and/or high-performance doors. This role executes New Product Development (NPD), Current Product Improvement (CPI), and Product Change Request (PCR) activities while providing technical support across the organization. Working closely with Engineering, Operations, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, Marketing, Product Management, Sales, and Customer Support, the Product Engineer develops innovative, reliable, manufacturable, and cost-effective products that meet customer, regulatory, safety, and business requirements.

Job Duties (functions considered essential as defined by ADA)

  • Design and develop mechanical systems, components, assemblies, and accessories for door and access system products.
  • Execute product development projects from concept through commercialization, including requirements definition, design, analysis, testing, validation, and production release.
  • Apply engineering principles to optimize product performance, reliability, manufacturability, installation efficiency, and cost.
  • Create engineering calculations, design specifications, test plans, validation reports, and technical documentation.
  • Lead or support product improvements, field investigations, warranty analysis, root cause analysis, corrective actions, and PCR execution.
  • Perform mechanical analyses involving strength, deflection, fatigue, vibration, motion, and structural integrity.
  • Develop and conduct laboratory and field testing, including functional, durability, environmental, abuse, and cycle-life evaluations.
  • Create and maintain CAD models, engineering drawings, BOMs, specifications, and released documentation.
  • Provide technical support to Manufacturing, Operations, Quality, Supply Chain, Sales, Marketing, Customer Service, and Field Service.
  • Support prototype builds, pilot runs, production launches, supplier qualification, and manufacturing problem-solving.
  • Participate in prototype fabrication, assembly, testing, troubleshooting, validation, and field evaluations.

Special assignments or tasks assigned to the employee by their supervisor, as determined from time to time at their sole and complete discretion.

Qualifications

Experience

A minimum of 2-5 years of mechanical engineering experience required. Experience in mechanical engineering, product design, or product development.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with commercial, industrial, building product, or access system products.
  • Experience with rolling steel doors, sectional doors, high-speed doors, dock equipment, overhead doors, gate systems, access controls, or similar products.
  • Knowledge of sheet metal design, weldments, structural components, machined parts, castings, and electromechanical assemblies.
  • Experience with DFM, DFA, DFR, tolerance analysis, failure analysis, FEA, PLM systems, and engineering change processes.
  • Knowledge of UL, ANSI, DASMA, NFPA, IBC, OSHA, and related industry standards.
  • Experience supporting manufacturing operations, supplier development, prototype development, and product validation.

Education

A minimum of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME or equivalent) is required.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks or equivalent 3D CAD software.
  • Knowledge of machine design, materials, manufacturing processes, mechanisms, and mechanical assemblies.
  • Strong analytical, communication, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

Work Conditions

Primarily office-based in a professional, climate-controlled environment using computer-based engineering systems. Regular interaction with engineering laboratories, manufacturing facilities, and warehouse operations. Work periodically in non-climate-controlled manufacturing or warehouse environments and wear required PPE. Occasional domestic travel up to 10%.

Physical Requirements

Occasionally lift and carry up to 40 pounds, climb ladders, access elevated work areas, and operate approved scissor lifts. Perform hands-on assembly, testing, measurement, and troubleshooting activities.
