Position Summary:  Database Administrator is responsible for developing, implementing and providing ongoing support of relational database technology, systems, services and business applications throughout Packaging Corporation of America with the end goal of ensuring that all database management systems are running at peak performance, are secure, recoverable and fully upgraded.  This involves assessing new technology, determining opportunities and coordinating all aspects of development to ensure effective support of the business functions.   Dimensions: PCA is the fourth largest manufacturer of containerboard and corrugated packaging in United States and third largest producer of uncoated freesheet in North America.  PCA is an ideas and solutions company.  We are a leader in helping our customer package, transport and display products of all kinds.  PCA embodies a culture of continuous improvement and, as such, is dedicated to developing adaptable and reliable computing solutions.  This position is part of a team that supports a) the Oracle RAC 19c database systems hosting PeopleSoft and Data Warehouse databases b) the Oracle database systems at 90-plus plant locations running manufacturing business applications c) the systems on SQL Server databases at eight of our Mills and companywide.     Principle Accountabilities: 

Develop and maintain efficient physical database models and identify/resolve data structure issues to meet both Corporate and plant business requirements. Provide and manage support for database systems and services to ensure data is available 24x7, which includes maintenance, capacity planning, data recovery and structural and data integrity.  Monitor and optimize system performance and identify and resolve any defects or deficiencies in a proactive manner to ensure the business applications are operating properly.  Interface with the business development teams during the data modeling efforts, logical and physical, to clarify the application design and ensure the best possible database structure. Work with software vendors to address issues regarding databases and management software to ensure the business application is functioning according to the user’s expectations. Demonstrate an understanding of project methodology to report and prioritize work to ensure all tasks and projects are completed in a timely manner and meet the business groups’ needs. Establishes and maintains relationships with corporate application and development teams as well as plant level system engineers to ensure operational efficiency Acts as a database advisor to proprietary application development project team for front and back-end development Knows and follows policies and procedures of the company, shares information that would benefit other members of the team and finds ways to improve the delivery of service to our customers.   Decision Making: The Database Administrator is required to make independent decisions based on sound industry practices and existing corporate regulations.  The Database Administrator is expected to drive performance of the team to meet his/her project goals.  The Database Administrator is expected to take general directions, and from those directions make decisions as to his/her approach to completing assigned projects, and is expected to determine how to operate and conduct assigned tasks within the established standards and procedures.   Interactions with Customers and Contacts Internally, the Database Administrator works closely with the application development and server/hardware system teams to execute assigned projects and provide database expertise.  The Database Administrator works closely with the application development team in carrying out complex projects and provides training and guidance to System Analysts.  The Database Administrator has limited external interaction.  However, any interaction with customers and vendors is governed by PCA’s business philosophy of meeting needs and exceeding expectations for customers and by PCA’s Commitment to Service of doing what’s right for our customers, focusing on strategies that add value and support growth, and keeping the promises that we make.   Position Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related degree Multi-year work experience of system development with Oracle 19C or higher running in a Client Server environment. Strong database optimization, troubleshooting and performance tuning skills are required. Technical skills require knowledge of a variety of technologies including RDBMS, specifically, Oracle along with Oracle RAC architecture, database partitioning, Oracle Active Data Guard, Oracle RMAN, LINUX and Windows, SQL and PL/SQL relevant to the database environment including a basic understanding of TCP/IP networking protocol.  Knowledge of SQL Server RDBMS, Service-Oriented Architecture, Java and XML are desired along with the ability to implement Industry Best Practices. Below listed experiences are a must:

Installation of Oracle database software in RAC environment on Linux nodes. Setup of Active Data Guard on primary and standby RAC Linux nodes. Perform database rolling upgrades and apply rolling upgrade patches on RAC Linux nodes. Taken RMAN backups of databases in RAC and Active Data Guard environment. Restored databases in RAC and Active Data Guard environment using RMAN backups. Perform database upgrades and apply patches to Oracle running on MS Windows running EE/SE editions. Thorough understanding of RMAN strategies for backup and restore of databases running on Linux and Windows. Worked with Oracle Support in resolving complex/difficult problems/cases.

Strong troubleshooting and performance tuning skills.

Strong problem solving, organizational, and decision making skills oriented on obtaining desired results.

Personal skills include the ability to work independently as well as part of a team and to have strong project organization and communication skills. Achiever, self-motivated, self-responsible, and accountable. Willing to provide support in evenings and weekends and be available by company supplied phone.
