Job Description

Senior Software Engineer

Location: US, Hoboken, NJ Remote

About the Role

We embrace an SVPG-inspired Product Operating Model, empowering cross-functional product teams to solve hard customer and business problems in ways that customers love and that work for the business. Strong products come from strong product teams, and this role is for a senior individual contributor engineer who will work side-by-side with Product Management, UX, and other engineers to turn product strategy into reliable, scalable software.

We are hiring a Senior Software Engineer (IC25) to contribute to our core assessment team for Higher Education. You will help evolve the objective assessment experience for an AI-enabled world while continuing to support a large, established user base, delivering over 3 billion questions to students annually.

Who you are

You are a curious, hands-on senior engineer who can own meaningful product capabilities end-to-end. You are comfortable across the stack, preferably with .NET and React, though strong experience in comparable server-side and modern client-side technologies is also valuable. You write maintainable code, understand technical trade-offs, and partner early with Product and UX rather than waiting for fully defined requirements. You are interested in AI-assisted coding tools and modern engineering workflows; hands-on experience is strongly preferred, but a willingness to learn, experiment, and share what works is acceptable.

What you'll work on

Engineering ownership, architecture and outcomes

  • Design, build, enhance, and maintain full stack assessment capabilities that are reliable, scalable, secure, and maintainable.
  • Own moderately complex technical workstreams end-to-end, from problem framing and design through implementation, testing, release, and operational follow-through.
  • Engage in architecture, API design, data model, integration, and platform trade-off discussions with clear recommendatins and documented decisions.
  • Contribute to roadmap and sequencing conversations by making technical constraints, dependencies, delivery risks, and incremental delivery options visible early.

Product discovery and technical partnership

  • Work directly with Product Management and UX as a single team, contributing engineering perspective during discovery, problem framing, and solution design.
  • Participate in customer-informed discovery where appropriate, helping translate user needs into technically sound and feasible solutions.
  • Develop empathy for learners, educators, administrators, and content teams who rely on Pearson assessment experiences and the platforms that power them.
  • Partner with product and design peers to prototype, validate, and iterate on solutions before committing to full-scale implementation.
  • Bring a practical engineering lens to build/buy/partner discussions, modernization opportunities, and platform investment decisions.

Delivery, execution and leadership

  • Deliver high-quality software iteratively in partnership with Product, UX, QA, and platform teams, balancing strategic modernization with near-term product commitments.
  • Act as a senior individual contributor who raises the bar through code reviews, mentoring, technical documentation, and thoughtful engineering practices.
  • Translate product goals and user stories into clear technical plans, implementation tasks, and acceptance criteria that reduce ambiguity for the team.
  • Manage technical scope and sequencing thoughtfully, surfacing trade-offs and risks early so the team can make informed decisions.

AI and technology

  • Build across the full stack, preferably using .NET and React, while applying sound engineering principles that transfer across comparable technologies.
  • Use or actively learn AI-assisted coding tools to improve development speed, code quality, experimentation, test generation, documentation, and problem solving.
  • Modernize legacy systems pragmatically, improving quality, security, observability, and maintainability without disrupting the existing user base.
  • Stay current with emerging engineering practices, AI-enabled development workflows, cloud patterns, and platform capabilities relevant to assessment experiences.

Stakeholders and storytelling

  • Build strong working relationships with Product Management, UX, QA, data, content, platform, and GTM partners; operate effectively in a matrix without needing formal authority.
  • Communicate technical strategy, progress, trade-offs, blockers, and risks clearly to engineering leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Tell a clear technical story: what problem is being solved, why the proposed approach is sound, what trade-offs exist, and what success looks like in production.

What we're looking for

  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a track record of delivering production software and owning meaningful technical workstreams end-to-end.
  • Strong full stack development experience, preferably with .NET/C# and React; comparable experience with other modern backend and frontend technologies is acceptable.
  • Experience designing and consuming APIs, working with cloud technologies (preferably AWS), and building secure, scalable, maintainable services and user experiences.
  • Strong engineering fundamentals, including object-oriented design, testing, debugging, code review, source control, CI/CD, performance, accessibility, and secure coding practices.
  • Experience with or strong interest in AI-assisted coding tools and AI-augmented development workflows; hands-on usage is strongly preferred, but willingness to learn is acceptable.
  • Ability to work effectively with Product Management and UX, contributing to discovery, feasibility, implementation planning, and iterative delivery.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, including the ability to explain technical concepts, trade-offs, and risks to both technical and non-technical partners.
  • Outcome-oriented mindset, strong ownership, sound judgment in ambiguity, and commitment to continuous improvement.

Bonus experience

  • Background in educational technology, assessment platforms, learning tools, or other high-scale B2B2C products.
  • Hands-on experience with .NET, React, cloud platforms, containerization, microservices, observability, or DevOps practices.
  • Practical experience using AI-assisted coding tools to accelerate development, improve testing, generate documentation, refactor legacy code, or explore solution options.
  • Experience modernizing legacy software while maintaining reliability for an existing user base.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
