The posting

Penlink is a technology company bringing clarity to complex data for people who need it now. We partner with law enforcement agencies across the world, offering a software solution to manage data and aid investigators solving crimes. It sounds like a lot of data and analytics, but really, it’s about improving the world and keeping safe the places we call home.

As a Database Engineer, you will be responsible for working within a software engineering team to design and develop software solutions utilizing an Oracle database backend. You’ll be creating new relational database models, improving, and extending existing models, and writing queries and stored procedures in collaboration with other database engineers. You will be responsible for making decisions on partitioning, indexing, and structure to ensure the product performs optimally and reliably under demanding and diverse use cases.

LOCATION: this is a hybrid opportunity with the requirement to commute to the Lincoln office twice a week.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design and implement moderately complex SQL queries, views, and stored procedures to support product features and reporting needs.
  • Optimize existing database structures, queries, and indexes to improve performance, reliability, and scalability.
  • Perform regular data quality checks and resolve data integrity issues across systems.
  • Support application developers by advising on data access patterns, query design, and schema usage.
  • Contribute to relational data modeling decisions, including table design, relationships, and constraints.
  • Participate in code reviews for database changes and uphold team coding standards and documentation practices.
  • Investigate and resolve database-related defects, escalating complex issues with clear analysis when needed.
  • Maintain thorough documentation of schemas, procedures, and changes.
  • Mentor and support Database Engineer I team members on day-to-day tasks and tools.
  • All other duties as the business requires

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • Oracle or PostgreSQL certification recommended.
  • 2–5 years of relevant database engineering experience.
  • Advanced SQL skills, including query optimization and stored procedure development.
  • Solid understanding of relational data modeling, normalization, and schema design.
  • Experience with indexing strategies and diagnosing performance bottlenecks.
  • Proactive troubleshooting skills and the ability to work independently on assigned tasks.
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to support developers across teams.
  • Disciplined approach to documentation and change management.
  • Hands-on experience with Oracle or PostgreSQL in a production environment.
  • Familiarity with partitioning, query execution plans, and database monitoring tools.
  • Experience supporting data-intensive or analytics-heavy applications.

This position currently follows a hybrid schedule requiring two days per week in our Lincoln, Nebraska office. Onsite requirements may be adjusted based on business needs and company or departmental policy.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
