PPCCC is a trusted provider of high-quality, affordable reproductive health care along California’s Central Coast. Each year, PPCCC provides 28,000 people on the central coast with health care services; including sexually transmitted infection testing and treatment, birth control, breast and cervical cancer screenings, vasectomies, and safe and legal abortion care at our six health center locations. PPCCC also provides comprehensive sexuality education programs to help adults and teens make healthy decisions, prevent unintended pregnancies, and avoid sexually transmitted infection.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Community Organizer is responsible for helping Planned Parenthood California Central Coast and Planned Parenthood Central Coast Action Fund achieve its community outreach, legislative, and grassroots organizing goals. Key areas of focus will include working with the community engagement team and Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California’s statewide office to implement the local and statewide advocacy field plan. This includes facilitating lobby days or days of action, coordinating regional phone banks and door-to-door canvassing efforts, doing community outreach, and recruiting volunteers. The job will also include tabling and representing Planned Parenthood California Central Coast at local health fairs and community events.

Service Region: Santa Maria / Northern SB County

Schedule: Part-time 20 hours/week

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Implement and manage a field organizing program and coordinate grassroots advocacy campaigns designed to increase the number of Planned Parenthood supporters and activists. Build deep and intentional relationships with community members, partner organizations, and leaders who support cross-collaboration efforts with PPCCC
  • Recruit, train, and mobilize volunteers and key legislative supporters in the region as needed to carry out grassroots organizing plans
  • Manage grant-funded programs and grantor relationships. This includes strategic planning, task management, regular reporting on outcomes, meeting deadlines, attending trainings, preparing narrative sections of grant reports, and all other grant duties and obligations
  • Support the coordination and implementation of our Patient Advocacy Programs
  • Coordinate and develop supportive student organizations at local colleges/universities
  • Collect data and report on constituents and program outcomes utilizing affiliate data- tracking tools
  • Link local-based issues with regional, state, and national issues

Planned Parenthood Central Coast Action Fund

  • Support PPCCAF’s public policy and advocacy work
  • Engage, inform, and mobilize local communities on local and state election issues and Planned Parenthood endorsed candidates & positions
  • Coordinate and lead volunteer voter outreach and mobilization including voter registration, canvasses, phone/text banks, rallies, lobbying, and other forms of grassroots action
  • Stay up to date on Planned Parenthood legislative priorities
  • Increase the number of supporters who opt in to receiving PPCCAF text and action alerts
  • Other job duties as assigned

  • Ability to demonstrate good judgment, initiative, and critical thinking

  • Has a strong commitment to reproductive, social, and racial justice
  • Previous experience in outreach, advocacy, and grassroots community organizing
  • Demonstrates ability to manage time independently to complete multiple projects and priorities simultaneously
  • Strong organizational and listening skills
  • Ability to work independently, as well as cooperatively and collaboratively in a team environment
  • Cultural sensitivity and ability to understand and relate to people of all identities, ages, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds
  • Ability to engage people from a variety of backgrounds on a one-on-one basis and group format
  • Respects confidentiality
  • Willingness and ability to work remotely and evening and weekend hours
  • Must have valid California driver’s license, reliable automobile transportation and insurance in accordance with California DMV requirements
  • Candidate must travel within PPCCC geographic area (Thousand Oaks to San Luis Obispo)
  • Candidate must travel out of service area / possible air travel 1-2 times per year

CUSTOMER SERVICE/COMMUNICATION:

  • Must be able to interact well with community partners, donors, volunteers, and colleagues
  • Must be able to collaboratively with all affiliate departments
  • Return e-mails and telephone calls from staff and external calls promptly

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred or two (2) or more years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 1-2 years in field/community organizing strongly preferred
  • Prior experience with campaign work
  • Experience with reproductive health advocacy and grassroots community organizing strongly preferred

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

• Fluent verbal and written Spanish language skills are preferred

Planned Parenthood California Central Coast’s (PPCCC’s) compensation philosophy supports the organization’s mission, vision, and values. Each position has a salary based on market value and the organization’s pay levels. The starting salary for this position is $32.50/hour with an opportunity for an increase after six months of employment. As part of our commitment to pay equity, PPCCC does not negotiate salaries.

Pay Differential: $1.00/hour bilingual Spanish/English differential pay is offered upon passing the language assessment test.
