This role is responsible for continuously improving test performance, troubleshooting complex electro-mechanical hardware issues, and supporting test equipment installation and validation on our manufacturing lines. Working directly on high-volume production, the Test Engineer combines hands-on technical investigation (approx. 65%) with proactive cross-discipline problem-solving and customer support (approx. 35%) to keep lines running efficiently and eliminate tribal knowledge across the department.

Key Job Accountabilities

  • Manufacturing Solutions & Line Support: Develop, validate, and maintain high-quality manufacturing test solutions; rapidly troubleshoot line stops and test discrepancies to ensure customer delivery requirements are met.
  • Hardware & HLA Diagnostics: Utilize appropriate tools and equipment (DMMs, oscilloscopes, power supplies) to perform root-cause debug on Higher-Level Assembly (HLA) and system-level electro-mechanical builds.
  • Customer Interface & Collaboration: Act as a daily technical point of contact for customer engineering teams, translating line performance data and test findings into actionable engineering improvements.
  • Documentation & Standards: Produce comprehensive project and quality documentation in accordance with Plexus change management procedures; establish technical best practices locally and collaborate with European sister sites.
  • Continuous Improvement & Mentorship: Drive test yield optimization and cycle-time reduction, sharing knowledge across disciplines to build a resilient, cross-trained manufacturing team.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering (or related technical discipline) with 2+ years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education (HNC/HND) and hands-on manufacturing/test experience.
  • Demonstrated background in board-level and system-level HLA test debug.
  • Hands-on experience with standard laboratory test and measurement equipment.

Skills & Attributes:

  • Analytical & Critical Thinking: Strong root-cause analysis mindset and practical problem-solving skills; Statistical Process Control (SPC) familiarity is a plus.
  • Interpersonal & Communication: Proven ability to build collaborative working relationships across cross-functional shop-floor teams and directly with external customers.
  • Software Tools (Advantageous): Exposure to or familiarity with automated test environments such as LabVIEW or TestStand (preferred, not essential).
  • Note: British nationality is not required; candidates must hold existing right to work in the UK.

Location & Lifestyle: Kelso, Scottish Borders

This position is based at our Kelso facility, offering an alternative to city congestion and high living costs:

  • Quality of Life: Located in the historic Scottish Borders, with world-class outdoor recreation—hill walking, cycling, fishing, and golf—directly accessible.
  • Affordable Living: Highly accessible property market compared to major UK metro hubs, while maintaining straightforward transport links to Edinburgh and Newcastle.
  • Relocation Support: We regularly welcome professionals relocating to the Borders who are seeking broader technical ownership paired with a scenic, balanced lifestyle.

Your Rewards and Wellbeing

We believe in rewarding your contribution with a comprehensive package designed to support your life both inside and outside of work.

  • Growth: Bespoke development plans and volunteer time off
  • Health: Private medical insurance, Employee Assistance Program and vision care
  • Wealth: Enhanced pension contributions, life assurance, and group income protection
  • Lifestyle: Electric Vehicle and Cycle to Work schemes, plus 33 days of annual leave

Application Process

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
