The posting

The Safety Intern supports Pieper Electric’s people-first safety culture by learning how hazard recognition, pre-task planning, jobsite observations, safe work practices, and incident prevention protect employees, customers, and project outcomes. Working alongside Health and Safety professionals, project teams, field leaders, and craftspeople, the intern assists with field observations, documentation, training support, safety communications, and continuous-improvement activities.

This internship provides meaningful exposure to electrical construction safety and the complete project lifecycle while developing the technical, professional, and business skills needed for an early-career role in occupational safety, construction safety, or environmental health and safety. Interns are expected to understand that safety is a shared responsibility and to speak up when conditions, behaviors, or information could place people or work at risk.

Values and Ways of Working

At Pieper Electric, we believe in the Power to Serve and the Pursuit of Excellence. Our values of Servant’s Heart, Wisdom, Integrity, Courage, Humility, and Passion guide how we learn, collaborate, support the field, and serve our customers and teammates. As an intern, you will be encouraged to ask questions, take initiative, seek feedback, protect confidential information, and contribute to a safe and respectful team environment.

What You Will Do

Safety and Field Engagement

  • Complete required safety orientation and follow all company, customer, and jobsite requirements.
  • Participate in supervised jobsite visits, pre-task planning discussions, safety observations, and hazard-recognition activities.
  • Observe work practices and jobsite conditions, ask questions, and communicate concerns through the appropriate field or safety leader.
  • Learn how safety, quality, schedule, productivity, and cost decisions affect one another during project execution.
  • Reinforce the shared responsibility to speak up and support respectful communication between field and office teams.

Hazard Recognition and Risk Prevention

  • Assist with identifying common electrical-construction hazards and the controls used to eliminate or reduce risk.
  • Learn the hierarchy of controls and how personal protective equipment, work planning, access control, and safe work practices support prevention.
  • Help document observations, recommended corrective actions, responsible owners, and follow-up status under supervision.
  • Support inspections of safety, first-aid, and fire-prevention equipment and report missing or damaged items.
  • Participate in conversations about changing conditions, lessons learned, and practical improvements to work methods.

Safety Programs, Compliance, and Documentation

  • Support the administration of safety policies, procedures, and records in accordance with company requirements and applicable regulations.
  • Assist with organizing training records, inspection forms, observation data, meeting materials, and other safety documentation.
  • Help maintain accurate logs, trackers, databases, and learning-management records while protecting confidential information.
  • Assist with basic research and preparation of safety communications, reports, presentations, spreadsheets, and trend summaries.
  • Learn how customer requirements, company standards, and regulatory expectations are communicated and applied on projects.

Training and Safety Communication

  • Help prepare materials and logistics for new-hire orientation, safety talks, contractor training, and other learning activities.
  • Observe experienced trainers and safety professionals and assist during classes or meetings as assigned.
  • Develop clear, audience-appropriate safety messages, toolbox-talk content, posters, or presentations for review.
  • Practice communicating safety expectations respectfully with employees at different levels of the organization.
  • Seek feedback and improve the clarity, accuracy, and usefulness of assigned safety communications.

Incident Prevention and Continuous Improvement

  • Observe the incident-review process and learn how facts, contributing factors, root causes, and corrective actions are documented.
  • Assist with preparation or organization of information for incident reports, safety reviews, and prevention follow-up.
  • Review observation or training information to identify themes and suggest practical prevention ideas for consideration.
  • Participate in lessons-learned discussions and complete an internship capstone that supports a practical safety improvement.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned within the intern’s training, supervision, and authorization.

What You Will Learn

  • Pieper Electric’s people-first safety culture and the responsibility to speak up.
  • Hazard recognition, pre-task planning, jobsite observations, safe work practices, and incident prevention.
  • How safety professionals partner with field leadership, project teams, employees, customers, and contractors.
  • How safety programs, training, documentation, observations, and corrective actions support consistent execution.
  • The role of applicable regulations, customer expectations, company standards, and continuous improvement in construction safety.
  • Professional communication, confidentiality, accountability, and problem-solving in office and field environments.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing an associate or bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Health and Safety, Construction Management, Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Risk Management, or a related field.
  • Interest in construction safety, electrical construction, field operations, training, or risk prevention.
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, Outlook, and Teams; willingness to learn company safety systems and technical tools.
  • Ability to travel locally to project sites and work in both office and active construction environments as the assignment requires.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation may be required based on project and jobsite assignments.

Core Skills and Behaviors

  • Positive safety attitude and personal integrity. Both are non-negotiable.
  • Courage and willingness to respectfully speak up, ask questions, and escalate concerns.
  • Curiosity, initiative, accountability, and openness to feedback.
  • Clear verbal and written communication with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to organize multiple priorities, maintain accurate records, and meet deadlines.
  • Respectful, service-oriented approach when working with field and office employees, customers, vendors, and contractors.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

The internship includes office and jobsite work. Office responsibilities may require extended periods of sitting, standing, and computer use. Jobsite visits may involve walking or standing for extended periods, stairs or uneven surfaces, outdoor conditions, noise, proximity to construction equipment, and required personal protective equipment. Jobsite activities will be performed under appropriate supervision and in accordance with company and customer safety requirements. Reasonable accommodation may be made for qualified individuals.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
