About Prefect

Prefect builds automation for an unpredictable world. The last decade of automation was about protecting workflows from unpredictability; in the agentic era, unpredictability is the point. Our mission is to give people confidence in automated work, whether that work is a mission-critical data pipeline or a fleet of AI agents.

In August 2026, Prefect and Dagster, competitors for eight years, joined forces to build the next generation of automation infrastructure. Today, our ecosystem includes Dagster, the data platform; Prefect, the agent platform; and FastMCP, the leading open-source developer framework for the MCP ecosystem. Together, our open-source and commercial products are trusted by Fortune 500 companies, data innovators, and high-growth technology companies around the world.

We think of our culture as the operating system of the company. We’ve carefully created a supportive, high-performance environment that empowers our team to do the best work of their careers, have meaningful impact, and continue growing personally and professionally. We’re a remote-first team that values high standards, ownership, and thoughtful collaboration.

ROLE SUMMARY

We have an audience most companies our size would be thrilled to have. FastMCP https://github.com/PrefectHQ/fastmcp is the leading framework for building MCP servers, with 27,000+ GitHub stars and a docs site developers read start to finish. Prefect's open-source orchestrator has been trusted by data teams for years. This year we acquired Dagster, which brings a second large open-source community with us.

With that opportunity in mind we're hiring a Head of Growth. You will set the strategy for how that audience becomes revenue and own the path from audience to signup to activated user to qualified pipeline, across the Prefect https://www.prefect.io/prefect/cloud, FastMCP Gateway https://www.prefect.io/horizon, and Dagster https://dagster.io funnels. That means deciding which motions we invest in and in what order, then building them: attribution, lifecycle and email, paid and organic acquisition, CRO and experimentation. You'll have a budget, a number to hit, and the mandate to build the growth function around what works.

You'll start as the only person in growth and build the team as results earn it. You'll report to our Chief Growth Officer, sit at the table where company priorities get set, and work daily with the Marketing, Sales, Product and Engineering leads.

Time zones: Anywhere in the continental US. We're remote-first. We have a slight preference for candidates near New York, the Bay Area, or Washington D.C., where our spaces and most of our events are, but it isn't a requirement.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

In your first year you will:

- Set the growth strategy and own the number. Decide how Prefect turns its audience across FastMCP, Dagster and Prefect open source into revenue: which motions we invest in, in what order, and what we expect back. Bring a plan with a budget and a pipeline target to leadership each quarter, and be accountable for hitting it.

- Build the funnel system. Model every major demand source with a baseline, a conversion target and an owner. Decide which stages we fix first, and ship the fixes yourself until there is someone else to do it.

- Run acquisition end to end. Own the paid and organic budget, channel mix, landing pages and CRO. Report cost per activated user and pipeline per dollar, reallocate budget monthly on that evidence, and kill what doesn't work quickly and out loud.

- Manage lifecycle programs. Design and ship the onboarding, activation and re-engagement programs. Measure activation lift and pipeline influenced, not open rates.

- Set the measurement foundation. Set campaign taxonomy, UTM discipline and the HubSpot-to-Salesforce handoff so attribution is trusted and we can run several experiments a month. Then run a monthly growth report the whole company reads and leadership plans against.

- Route the audience to the right product. Turn FastMCP's developer audience into FastMCP Gateway accounts through in-product paths, docs placements, end cards and CTAs. Work with Product and Engineering to make this a product surface, not just a campaign. This is the highest-leverage number in the role.

YOUR QUALIFICATIONS

MUST HAVE

- 10+ years in growth or demand generation at B2B SaaS or developer-focused companies with a budget and a pipeline or revenue target you were held to.

- You've set growth strategy for a company, not just a channel: picked the motions, sequenced the investment, defended the plan to an Executive, and reported honestly on what came back, including the parts that didn't work.

- You're still hands-on. You've been the person in the tool recently, and you will be again here. You can build a campaign, a lifecycle sequence and a funnel model yourself, and you expect to for the first several months.

- You've built attribution and funnel reporting from close to nothing: campaign taxonomy, UTM structure, and a funnel model leadership used to make decisions. HubSpot and Salesforce, or close equivalents.

- Lifecycle ownership with measured results. Onboarding and activation programs where you can tell us the before-and-after conversion numbers, and what you learned when one of them failed.

- You've hired and managed growth marketers and contractors, and you know when a contractor beats a hire.

- Comfort being the only person in your function to start. You'll pick the sequence, say no to good ideas, and ship without a team behind you until the results earn one.

NICE TO HAVE

- Background at an open-source or developer-tools company. You know why a GitHub star isn't a lead, and you've dealt with the particular weirdness of marketing to engineers.

- SQL, and comfort living in a BI tool. Our stack is HubSpot, Salesforce, Amplitude, Common Room, and Omni.

- Experience running a product-led self-serve funnel alongside an enterprise sales-led motion without one cannibalizing the other.

- You've taken a product from early traction to a repeatable growth engine, and can describe what you changed at each stage.

- You've worked closely with Product and Engineering on in-product growth (onboarding flows, activation triggers, in-app prompts) and can show how it moved the numbers.

WHO THIS ROLE IS NOT FOR

We'd rather you rule yourself out now than be unhappy in six months.

- You want to run a team from day one. You'll start as the only person in growth. The team comes as the results earn it, and you'll build it yourself. If you need a team under you to operate, this isn't it.

- You're done being hands-on. You will set the strategy and build the first version of most of it. If you'd rather brief someone who's in the tool, this will be a frustrating job.

- You need clean data before you'll commit to a number. Some of our plumbing is broken. You'll fix it while also being accountable for outcomes. Those happen at the same time.

- You prefer to work through an agency. Contractors are fine for execution. The thinking, the prioritization and the first builds will be yours.

- You want a stable roadmap. We merged with another company this year, we're validating a new product direction, and priorities move. If that reads as chaos rather than opportunity, this will be a frustrating job.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
