Position Overview

Prep Academy Tutors of Greater Columbus is looking for exceptional Reading Specialists who believe that the right instruction, delivered in the right environment, can make a lasting difference in a student's academic journey.

We are seeking experienced, certified teachers and highly qualified educators with a specialization in literacy and reading instruction to provide personalized, one-on-one Reading Specialist tutoring to elementary and middle school students in grades K–8 throughout the Columbus area. Our tutors work directly with students in their homes, creating focused learning environments where students can strengthen foundational literacy skills, address reading challenges, develop effective reading strategies, and build confidence as independent readers.

This role is especially well suited for current or former classroom teachers, Reading Specialists, and literacy interventionists who enjoy the individualized nature of tutoring and want the opportunity to work closely with students outside of a traditional classroom setting.

About Prep Academy Tutors

Prep Academy Tutors provides premium, individualized tutoring designed around the unique needs of each student and family. Rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach, we meet students where they are and develop instruction around their academic goals, learning style, strengths, and areas for growth.

Our Columbus team is committed to delivering high-quality, relationship-based educational support in the comfort and convenience of students' homes. We believe strong tutoring is about more than completing assignments—it is about helping students develop essential literacy skills, overcome reading difficulties, and become more capable, confident, and independent learners.

What You'll Do

As a Reading Specialist Tutor, you will:

  • Deliver engaging, one-on-one reading instruction and targeted literacy intervention to elementary and middle school students in grades K–8 in the student's home
  • Assess students' reading abilities and identify areas of strength, difficulty, and opportunities for improvement
  • Provide support in phonics, phonemic awareness, decoding, word recognition, spelling, fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension
  • Help students strengthen foundational literacy skills and develop effective reading strategies
  • Deliver targeted instruction to support struggling readers and students experiencing reading delays or literacy gaps
  • Reinforce classroom instruction and help students develop the skills necessary to meet grade-level reading expectations
  • Adapt lessons, materials, and instructional strategies to each student's individual learning needs, reading level, and academic goals
  • Implement evidence-based reading strategies and instructional approaches to support literacy development
  • Support students in developing reading accuracy, fluency, comprehension, and confidence
  • Help students strengthen their ability to understand, analyze, and interpret grade-appropriate texts
  • Identify areas of academic difficulty and develop targeted strategies and individualized learning plans for improvement
  • Support students with dyslexia, learning differences, and other literacy-related challenges, as appropriate to your expertise
  • Monitor student progress and adjust instruction based on ongoing observations and learning outcomes
  • Establish positive, professional relationships with students and their families
  • Communicate meaningful observations, student progress, and instructional recommendations to families
  • Encourage students to take ownership of their learning and develop greater independence and confidence as readers
  • Maintain a professional, supportive, and productive in-home learning environment
  • Travel to students' homes throughout the Columbus, Ohio area

What We're Looking For

We are looking for educators who bring strong knowledge of literacy development, reading intervention, and evidence-based reading instruction, along with genuine teaching experience and a passion for helping students succeed.

Ideal candidates will have:

  • A bachelor's degree or higher
  • A valid Ohio teaching license/certificate or equivalent teaching credential, preferably in Reading, Literacy, Reading Specialist, Elementary Education, or a related field
  • Demonstrated classroom teaching or reading intervention experience
  • Strong knowledge of foundational reading skills and literacy development
  • Experience working with elementary and middle school students in grades K–8
  • Knowledge of evidence-based reading instruction and intervention strategies
  • The ability to assess reading needs and adapt instruction for different learning styles, abilities, and academic levels
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Patience, professionalism, reliability, and a student-centered approach
  • Excellent organization and time-management skills
  • Reliable transportation and the ability to travel to student homes
  • Authorization to work in the United States

Preferred Qualifications

Preference may be given to candidates who have:

  • Current or recent experience as a certified Reading Specialist, literacy interventionist, reading teacher, or elementary classroom teacher
  • A Reading Specialist endorsement, literacy certification, or graduate-level specialization in reading instruction
  • Experience teaching literacy or providing reading intervention in a public, private, or charter school
  • Experience supporting struggling readers and students with significant literacy gaps
  • Experience teaching phonics, phonemic awareness, decoding, spelling, fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension
  • Knowledge of structured literacy and evidence-based reading intervention approaches
  • Experience supporting students with dyslexia, learning differences, or other diverse academic needs
  • Experience conducting informal reading assessments and using assessment results to guide instruction
  • Experience developing individualized reading intervention plans and monitoring student progress
  • Experience helping students improve reading comprehension, vocabulary development, and academic literacy
  • A master's degree or higher in Reading Education, Literacy, Reading Specialist, or a related field
  • Experience providing private tutoring or individualized reading intervention

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
