Design Assistant – Scout Technologies – Summer 2027 We are looking for a summer or co-op student currently enrolled in mechanical, electrical, computer, or a related engineering program to join our multidisciplinary team as a Design Assistant. This role is well suited to a student in mechanical, electrical, computer, or a related engineering discipline who is technically curious, enjoys solving practical problems, and wants hands-on exposure to product development. You will work alongside team members from several engineering and manufacturing disciplines and contribute to real product, testing, automation, and production challenges. The specific mix of work will be adapted to your background, interests, and the priorities of the team during the term. What You May Work On
Design test fixtures, prototypes, tools, and product improvements Support product testing, data collection, and analysis Contribute to mechanical, electrical, firmware, or software work Use Python and other tools to automate testing and improve workflows Support design reviews, documentation, production, and technical problem solving
A Meaningful Summer Project Summer students are given ownership of one or more real engineering projects that are important to Scout's growth. Each project begins with a clear charter defining its purpose, scope, deliverables, and timeline, while leaving room for the student to investigate the problem and develop solutions. Projects are selected to provide meaningful exposure to the engineering process, from defining requirements and evaluating concepts through implementation, testing, and communicating results. We believe the best learning comes from working on real problems that matter, alongside experienced engineers who can provide guidance, mentorship, and perspective throughout the journey. Experience and Skills You do not need to meet every item below. We place a high value on curiosity, initiative, practical problem solving, and the ability to learn quickly.
Interested in practical problem solving and working across engineering disciplines.
Experience with, or a desire to learn, Python and engineering automation tools. Clear communication skills, initiative, and a collaborative approach. Hands-on experience with design, electronics, embedded systems, testing, tools, or fabrication is an asset.
