Safety Manager, GRD

Position Purpose The Safety Manager is responsible for the effective implementation, administration, and continuous improvement of the site Health & Safety management system. The role provides technical safety expertise, regulatory and corporate compliance support, risk-management guidance, training, auditing, incident investigation support, and safety performance reporting across the operation. The Safety Manager partners closely with Operations and supporting functions to ensure corporate safety standards are effectively implemented at the site level, risks are systematically identified and controlled, and corrective actions result in sustainable improvements. The Safety Manager supports and strengthens operational ownership of safety rather than replacing it. Operational leadership remains accountable for safe execution within their areas. The Safety Manager provides independent technical advice and escalation of significant safety risks when required.

Safety Management System & Compliance

Develop and maintain an annual site safety plan aligned with corporate standards, regulatory requirements, and site risk. Implement and maintain corporate safety policies, standards, programs, and regulatory requirements. Monitor compliance through inspections, internal audits, observations, risk assessments, and other verification activities. Identify gaps in safety systems, processes, standards, and documentation and drive corrective improvements. Maintain effective systems for safety records, regulatory requirements, compliance activities, and audit readiness.

Risk Identification & Control

Lead and support workplace inspections, task risk assessments, change reviews, and other formal risk-assessment activities. Partner with Operations, Engineering, Maintenance, and other functions to identify hazards and develop practical risk controls. Promote application of the hierarchy of controls, with emphasis on eliminating hazards or implementing engineered controls where practical. Ensure significant and recurring risks receive appropriate visibility, action, and escalation. Provide independent technical guidance when operational requirements and safety risk require additional review or escalation.

Incident Investigation & Corrective Actions

Support and oversee incident, near-miss, and high-potential incident investigations. Ensure investigations are completed thoroughly and identify meaningful causal and systemic factors. Monitor corrective-action quality, ownership, due dates, aging, effectiveness, and closure. Maintain HSI records with appropriate risk ratings, ownership, due dates, and closure evidence. Provide appropriate technical review and approval of corrective-action closure in accordance with corporate requirements. Review recurring incidents, findings, and corrective actions to identify systemic issues and opportunities for prevention.

Safety Training & Competency

Maintain site safety training requirements and training matrices. Coordinate and/or deliver required safety training for employees and leadership. Ensure new or revised safety requirements are effectively communicated and incorporated into appropriate training. Support leadership capability in hazard recognition, risk assessment, incident investigation, and safety responsibilities.

Safe Work Procedures & Standards

Coordinate the development, review, and maintenance of Safe Work Procedures and other safety documentation. Monitor overdue reviews and ensure procedures remain aligned with equipment, processes, hazards, and corporate standards. Ensure lessons learned from incidents, audits, risk assessments, and process changes are incorporated into applicable safety standards and procedures.

Safety Performance & Leadership Support

Maintain accurate site safety KPIs and supporting evidence. Develop meaningful reporting covering incidents, risk, audits, corrective actions, investigations, SWPs, training, and emerging issues. Establish and facilitate a regular safety performance review with plant leadership. Identify trends, recurring issues, material risks, and barriers requiring leadership attention. Provide clear recommendations regarding safety priorities, resources, and risk-reduction initiatives. Support continuous improvement of the site's overall safety management system.

Team Leadership

Lead, coach, and develop Safety Coordinator direct reports. Establish priorities, expectations, responsibilities, and appropriate coverage for the Safety team. Ensure Safety Coordinators are effectively supporting plant safety systems while maintaining clear operational ownership of safe work. Develop capability within the Safety team in risk assessment, investigation, compliance, auditing, and safety-system administration.

Core Competencies

Strong technical judgment and risk-based decision-making Incident investigation and root-cause analysis Hazard identification and application of the hierarchy of controls Regulatory and safety-management-system knowledge Analytical thinking and problem-solving Ability to influence operational leaders while maintaining professional independence Leadership, coaching, and capability development Clear written and verbal communication Strong organizational and follow-through skills

Education, Experience & Knowledge

Relevant occupational health and safety education, recognized professional designation, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in health and safety within a manufacturing or industrial environment. Demonstrated experience with incident investigation, risk assessment, auditing, corrective-action management, and regulatory compliance. Working knowledge of applicable occupational health and safety requirements and corporate safety standards. Experience leading or developing safety professionals is preferred. Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
