The posting

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Engineer, Backend – Protection based in Romania.

Join an innovative global payments technology company building infrastructure that helps businesses simplify payment operations, optimize performance, and protect revenue. As a Senior Backend Engineer on the Protection team, you will design and develop scalable solutions for payment dispute management, fraud prevention, and risk automation. You will take ownership of critical backend systems, from architecture and implementation to deployment, monitoring, and continuous improvement. Working closely with Engineering and Product leadership, you will transform complex merchant challenges into reliable, automated solutions that deliver measurable business value. This is an opportunity to shape a growing technical domain, make key architectural decisions, and build integrations with payment service providers and leading fraud prevention platforms. In a fully remote, collaborative environment, your contributions will have a direct impact on product quality, customer outcomes, and the future of payment protection.

Accountabilities

  • Backend Engineering and Architecture: Design, build, deploy, and maintain robust backend systems, taking ownership of solutions throughout their entire lifecycle. Make architectural decisions regarding service boundaries, integration patterns, and data models to ensure scalability, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Payment Dispute Automation: Develop automation capabilities that help merchants manage payment disputes at scale, including notifications, deadline tracking, evidence collection, and response workflows.
  • Payment Service Provider Integrations: Expand dispute management coverage across the broader payment network by integrating additional payment service providers and ensuring consistent functionality across different platforms.
  • Fraud Prevention Integrations: Collaborate with third-party fraud prevention providers, including Riskified, Forter, Signifyd, and Sift, to build a unified experience for comparing, managing, and switching between fraud solutions.
  • Rules and Signals Engine: Design and implement native risk management capabilities, including velocity rules, blocklists, device fingerprinting, and configurable automation that enables merchants to manage fraud and disputes more effectively.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Engineering Managers, Product Managers, and other stakeholders to translate merchant challenges into practical technical solutions, prioritizing delivery, customer value, and measurable outcomes.
  • Product Development: Contribute to backend development as the primary focus, while supporting dashboard frontend development when needed to deliver complete product experiences.
  • Quality, Reliability, and Monitoring: Establish and maintain high engineering standards through testing, code reviews, monitoring, and continuous improvement. Ensure that critical dispute and fraud workflows operate reliably, minimizing errors that could result in financial losses for customers.
  • Technical Leadership and Mentoring: Share expertise, mentor colleagues, and raise the team's technical standards through sound engineering practices, thoughtful architectural decisions, and collaborative problem-solving.
  • Engineering Foundations: Help establish team conventions, operational tooling, on-call processes, and development practices as the function grows, balancing foundational improvements with frequent, high-quality product delivery.
  • Proven experience owning backend systems end to end, from architecture and development through deployment, monitoring, and ongoing maintenance.
  • Strong software engineering and system design skills, with the ability to design scalable backend architectures and make sound technical decisions in evolving environments.
  • Experience building systems from scratch, defining technical approaches, and taking ownership of ambiguous problems without relying on fully established processes.
  • High standards for code quality, testing, reliability, and operational excellence, particularly when developing systems where failures can have significant financial or operational consequences.
  • A proactive, delivery-focused mindset, with a track record of shipping improvements frequently, gathering feedback, and translating ideas into reliable customer-facing functionality.
  • Experience mentoring engineers, supporting colleagues' technical development, or helping establish engineering best practices.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to investigate complex issues and balance speed of delivery with long-term system quality.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with Engineering and Product stakeholders in a remote, distributed environment.
  • Comfort working in a growing team where requirements, processes, tooling, and operational practices are still evolving.
  • Experience in payments, fraud prevention, risk management, or another technically complex domain is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with card scheme rules, chargeback processes, and payment dispute workflows is a plus.
  • Experience integrating third-party fraud prevention vendors, developing webhook-based event systems, building rules engines, or working with orchestration platforms is beneficial.
  • Willingness to contribute to frontend development when necessary, although backend engineering remains the primary focus.
  • Fully remote work: Work from Poland in a globally distributed organization that has embraced remote working from its inception.
  • Competitive compensation: Attractive compensation package and competitive employee share options.
  • Flexible holidays: Flexible paid leave, with a minimum of 25 days to be taken annually.
  • Coworking access: Access to coworking spaces across major cities to support flexible working arrangements.
  • Workations and company retreats: Opportunities to connect with colleagues through organized workations and annual company gatherings.
  • Home office allowance: £500 toward setting up a comfortable and productive home workspace.
  • Professional development: A generous learning budget to support ongoing skills development and career growth.
  • Equipment: High-quality equipment tailored to your role and technical needs.
  • Healthcare: Private medical insurance, subject to applicable location and eligibility arrangements.
  • Additional perks: A range of supplementary benefits depending on location.
  • Supportive working culture: Collaborative colleagues, structured onboarding, and an environment that encourages ownership, continuous learning, and high-quality work.
  • Meaningful technical impact: The opportunity to shape architecture, establish engineering practices, and build critical payment protection capabilities within a growing team.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
