With a staff of 950+ and an annual budget of $140 million, Project Renewal is one of the larger social service nonprofits in New York City.   Title:                  Fleet Coordinator/Driver             Program:          City Beets Kitchen Salary Range:  $28.00/hour             Overall Responsibilities: The Fleet Coordinator/Driver is responsible for ensuring the organization’s fleet of vans operates safely, efficiently, and reliably in support of daily catering and meal delivery. This hands-on position combines fleet coordination, vehicle maintenance oversight, driving responsibilities, and real-time problem-solving. The ideal candidate is organized, mechanically inclined, dependable, and able to respond quickly to transportation challenges.    Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The essential duties of the Fleet Coordinator include but are not limited to the following activities:   Fleet Operations

Coordinate the daily deployment of fleet vehicles to meet catering, meal delivery, and event schedules. Conduct inspections of vehicles to ensure they are clean, safe, and operational. Monitor vehicle mileage, fuel usage, maintenance schedules, and inspections. Maintain fleet records, registrations, insurance documentation, and service history. Schedule preventive maintenance and repairs to minimize vehicle downtime. Work with repair vendors and monitor repair quality and costs. Responsible of dispatching routes to drivers according to daily event schedules.

  Driver Responsibilities

Safely transport meals, catering equipment, supplies to various locations. Complete delivery logs, mileage reports, and vehicle inspection reports. Serve as a backup driver whenever staffing shortages or emergencies arise.

  Fleet Problem Solving

Respond to vehicle breakdowns and roadside emergencies. Troubleshoot transportation issues and coordinate immediate solutions to keep operations running smoothly. Reassign vehicles or routes when mechanical issues or scheduling conflicts occur. Communicate effectively with drivers, kitchen staff, and management regarding transportation updates.

  Team Support

Assist with training new drivers on vehicle safety, inspections, and organizational procedures. Promote safe driving practices and accountability among transportation staff. Ensure drivers are scheduled to cover all routes and arrange coverage for call-outs and PTO. Assist with disciplinary and corrective actions for traffic violations and citations. Support the Assistant Director of Transportation in improving fleet efficiency and reducing operating costs.

  Performance Expectations

Maintain vehicle readiness and minimize fleet downtime. Ensure on-time deliveries and transportation support. Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and customer service. Support the organization’s mission by ensuring reliable transportation for meals, catering events, and community programs. Available to work flexible schedules and overtime as needed.

  Physical Requirements

Frequent walking, standing, bending, lifting, and driving. Ability to load and unload catering equipment and food deliveries. Ability to safely operate cargo vans and light commercial vehicles.

  Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED required. Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record. Minimum of 2-3 years of commercial driving, fleet coordination, logistics, or transportation experience. Experience with cargo vans, box trucks, or commercial vehicles preferred. Basic mechanical knowledge and ability to identify vehicle issues. Strong organizational and communication skills. Ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and fleet management software is preferred. Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions. This position requires drug screening in accordance with New York State and New York City laws. 

  Preferred Skills

Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities. Strong customer service and teamwork skills. Ability to remain calm under pressure and respond quickly to transportation emergencies. Experience working in nonprofit organizations, food service, catering, or meal delivery operations. Knowledge of New York City streets and delivery logistics is highly desirable.

  This position is ideal for someone who enjoys being both in the field and behind the scenes—keeping vehicles on the road, solving problems before they become emergencies, and ensuring that meal deliveries and catering operations continue without interruption.
