POSITION SPECIFICS

Tenure-line Faculty Positions in Artificial Intelligence

The Department of Informatics and Intelligent Systems (IIS) in the College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST) at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for multiple tenure-line faculty positions in Artificial Intelligence (AI). The appointments will be at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank and will begin in July of 2027 at the University Park campus in State College, Pennsylvania. Remote appointments are not permitted for these hires.

We seek to build on the strengths of the department in AI, including causal inference, computer vision, human-centered and socially responsible AI, knowledge representation, machine learning, natural language processing, multi-agent systems, AI ethics, and/or transformative AI applications that tackle major scientific and/or societal challenges. We seek scholars who complement our existing strengths, and bring expertise in core areas of AI, or who bridge fundamental research in AI with transformative applications in the sciences, healthcare, security, critical infrastructure, public policy, the humanities, and/or social sciences.

The department is home to Penn State’s undergraduate B.S. degree in Artificial Intelligence Methods and Applications (AIMA) and offers the Applied Data Sciences Option of the tri-college B.S. degree in Data Sciences. Candidates will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses, conduct cutting-edge research, supervise and mentor graduate students, secure external funding to support research activities, engage in service activities at the college and university levels, and collaborate with faculty across the university and industry partners.

Candidates must possess a PhD in Artificial Intelligence, Cognitive Science, Computer Science, Informatics, or a closely related discipline before their appointment start date at Penn State. Applicants for the rank of Assistant Professor will demonstrate a potential for research excellence (as demonstrated by publications in top venues), strong potential for securing external funding for research, and potential to contribute to teaching in AI and related areas. Candidates seeking the rank of Associate Professor should have an established record of research excellence, external funding, teaching and curriculum development, and service.

Applicants should include i) a cover letter with information about their interests and qualifications for the position; ii) a research statement summarizing past accomplishments and future plans; iii) a teaching statement summarizing teaching philosophy, teaching experience, and teaching interests; iv) a curriculum vitae; and v) contact information for at least three professional references.

The Pennsylvania State University is among the top 25 research universities in the United States. The Department of Informatics and Intelligent Systems and the College of Information Sciences and Technology offer fertile grounds for interdisciplinary collaborative research at the interface of computing, data science, AI and other disciplines. Additional collaborative opportunities and extensive resources are offered by the interdisciplinary research institutes – Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (which provides excellent high-performance computing facilities and support), Huck Institute of the Life Sciences, Materials Research Institute, Institute for Energy and the Environment, Social Science Research Institute, Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute, and the National Security Institute.

The Penn State University Park campus is located in State College, a vibrant and welcoming college town in central Pennsylvania. The area offers an excellent quality of life, with highly regarded schools, a strong sense of community, and abundant cultural, recreational, dining, and outdoor opportunities. State College combines the amenities and energy of a major research university with the affordability, convenience, and natural beauty of a smaller community. The campus is served by nearby State College Regional Airport, providing convenient air travel and connections to major transportation hubs. State College is also within approximately a 2–4 hour drive of several major metropolitan areas, including Pittsburgh, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York City. This combination of accessibility, community, and quality of life makes State College an attractive place to live, work, and build a career.

Inquiries about the position may be directed to [email protected]. Review of applications begins on November 1, 2026, and will continue while positions remain open.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
