The posting

Consultant Anaesthetist: Wide Bay, Queensland Permanent | Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service | AUD $313,514 to $545,000 | Expedited pathway available for UK and Irish-trained anaesthetists

Opportunity

Pulse Doctors is proud to support hospitals across Australia and New Zealand, connecting UK and Irish-trained specialists with outstanding permanent opportunities. We are currently working with Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service on a permanent Consultant Anaesthetist vacancy across the area in Queensland. You’ll provide high-quality anaesthetic and peri-operative care to the Wide Bay community, while supervising and teaching registrars, trainees and junior doctors.

Join a team committed to delivering high-quality anaesthetic care while enjoying a relaxed coastal lifestyle.

UK and Irish-trained anaesthetists: if you hold a UK CCT with FRCA, or an Irish CSCST with FCAI, you may be eligible for the Expedited Specialist Pathway. This means specialist registration with AHPRA without going through the standard college assessment process, so you can move from application to practising as a specialist far more quickly.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide anaesthesia, analgesia, peri-operative and related services for patients
  • Participate in the after-hours on-call roster
  • Provide outpatient consultations, pre-operative assessments, ward consultations and other related anaesthetic services
  • Provide clinical supervision and procedural assistance to registrars, other trainees and junior doctors
  • Supervise, assess and teach junior doctors who are AMC Workplace Based Assessment candidates
  • Supervise the day-to-day activities of allocated junior medical staff
  • Work collaboratively with other departments and the multidisciplinary team to deliver safe, high-quality patient outcomes
  • Deliver educational activities within the Department of Anaesthesia for medical practitioners, allied health staff and nurses
  • Initiate and take part in research and evaluation with the Health Service and related academic institutions
  • Participate in departmental quality assurance, including morbidity and mortality reviews, audits, case reviews and significant incident reviews
  • Maintain accurate, contemporaneous clinical documentation and complete medico-legal correspondence promptly
  • Support the Clinical Director with administrative duties on request, such as rosters, medical reports and input on equipment, policies and clinical pathways
  • Work at other Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service sites in consultation with you, if required
  • Take part in your own continuing professional development, annual performance appraisal and peer review

Essential Criteria to Apply

  • Applicants should be registered (or eligible for registration) as a specialist with the Medical Board of Australia and be a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (FANZCA) or equivalent as an overseas trained specialist who has completed their training in either the UK, Ireland, Canada, USA (ABA certified) or New Zealand
  • Specialist registration in anaesthesia with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA), or eligibility to obtain it: UK CCT with FRCA or Irish CSCST with FCAI holders can apply through the Expedited Specialist Pathway
  • Willingness to work across other facilities within Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service
  • Compliance with Queensland Health vaccination requirements (Hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella and pertussis) and a TB risk assessment

Highly Desirable

  • Previous experience in an acute or trauma teaching hospital
  • Proven ability to work collegiately with clinicians, nursing staff and managers
  • Clinical leadership skills and the ability to facilitate multidisciplinary teamwork
  • A clinical or academic appointment

What’s on Offer for You?

  • Total Renumeration package of AUD $313,514 to $545,000 ( inclusive of salary between $192,257 - $281,545 p.a., generous employer superannuation (up to 12.75%, salary sacrifice perks, enhancements, on-call and flexible rostering for optimal work/life balance).
  • Relocation support
  • Visa sponsorship
  • Fast route to Australian specialist registration for eligible UK and Irish-trained anaesthetists
  • A varied consultant role across two hospitals, with outpatient, pre-operative and ward work as well as theatre
  • Active involvement in teaching and supervising registrars, trainees and junior doctors
  • Opportunities to take part in research, quality improvement and service development with academic partners
  • Support for continuing professional development, with annual appraisal and peer review
  • The chance to shape your clinical role through audit, governance and departmental activity

Location in Detail

The role is based across Hervey Bay and Maryborough on Queensland’s Fraser Coast, within the Wide Bay region, roughly three to four hours’ drive north of Brisbane. Hervey Bay is known for its beaches, relaxed coastal lifestyle, whale watching in season and as the gateway to K’gari (Fraser Island). Maryborough is a historic heritage city, so the region offers a mix of coast and community, with a lower cost of living than the major cities.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
