Opportunity

Pulse Doctors is proud to support hospitals across Australia and New Zealand, connecting UK and Irish-trained specialists with outstanding permanent opportunities. We are currently working with Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora on a permanent Consultant Vascular Surgeon vacancy at Nelson Hospital, the main hospital serving the Nelson Tasman region at the top of the South Island. You’ll provide high-quality elective and emergency vascular surgical care to a community across a broad range of vascular presentations, while supervising and teaching registrars, trainees and junior doctors.

Join a supportive surgical team delivering excellent patient care while enjoying one of New Zealand’s sunniest and most scenic regions.

UK-trained vascular surgeons: if you hold a UK CCT in vascular surgery and are registered with the GMC, you may be eligible for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) assesses surgical applications on the Council’s behalf. Depending on the outcome, registration is typically granted in the provisional vocational scope, with a period of supervised practice. We guide you through the process.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide diagnosis, assessment and surgical management for patients with a broad range of vascular conditions
  • Deliver both elective and emergency vascular surgical services
  • Participate in the after-hours on-call roster
  • Provide outpatient clinics, ward consultations and pre-operative and post-operative care
  • Provide clinical supervision and procedural assistance to registrars, other trainees and junior doctors
  • Supervise and teach junior medical staff and contribute to the department’s education program
  • Work collaboratively with anaesthetic, radiology, intensive care, emergency and wider multidisciplinary teams to deliver safe, high-quality patient outcomes
  • Initiate and take part in research, audit and service evaluation
  • Participate in departmental quality assurance, including morbidity and mortality reviews, case reviews and significant incident reviews
  • Maintain accurate, contemporaneous clinical documentation
  • Work across Nelson Hospital and other Nelson Marlborough sites in consultation with you, if required
  • Take part in your own continuing professional development, annual performance appraisal and peer review

Essential Criteria to Apply

  • Completion of specialist training in vascular surgery, such as a UK CCT, or eligibility for vocational registration in vascular surgery with the Medical Council of New Zealand
  • Current GMC registration (or equivalent) and the ability to meet Medical Council of New Zealand requirements, including RACS assessment as an overseas-trained surgeon
  • Ability to be credentialed by the hospital before commencing
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • A commitment to high-quality, culturally safe patient care

What’s on Offer for You?

  • Competitive total remuneration of NZD $343,542 on average (higher those vastly experienced)
  • Relocation support
  • Visa sponsorship
  • Guidance through Medical Council of New Zealand and RACS registration for eligible UK-trained vascular surgeons
  • A varied consultant role in a regional hospital with a broad case mix
  • Active involvement in teaching and supervising registrars, trainees and junior doctors
  • Opportunities to take part in research, quality improvement and service development
  • Support for continuing professional development, with annual appraisal and peer review
  • The chance to shape your clinical role through audit, governance and departmental activity

Location in Detail

The role is based at Nelson Hospital in Nelson, a city on Tasman Bay at the top of New Zealand’s South Island. Nelson is known for its sunny climate, beaches, thriving arts scene and weekend markets, with a strong local food, craft beer and wine culture. Abel Tasman National Park, Kahurangi National Park and Nelson Lakes are all within reach, and the Marlborough Sounds and wine region are nearby. Hiking, cycling, sailing, kayaking and skiing are all easy to get to, which makes Nelson a popular choice for UK families looking for a relaxed outdoor lifestyle with a close-knit community.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
