Job Overview

We are currently seeking an experienced and motivated Band 6/7 Specialist Paediatric Speech and Language Therapist (SALT) to join a community-based service in Birmingham on a locum basis for an initial period of three months.

The successful candidate will provide specialist Speech and Language Therapy assessment and intervention for children, young people and their families across a range of community settings, including clinics, Child Development Centres, educational settings and patients’ homes.

Working as part of multidisciplinary and multi-agency teams, you will contribute to the holistic assessment, diagnosis and intervention of children and young people within the Neurodevelopmental Pathway. You will deliver highly specialist interventions in line with agreed packages of care and clinical pathways, while working collaboratively with families, carers and other professionals.

This role also offers the opportunity to contribute to the ongoing development of the Neurodevelopmental Pathway, support service improvement and demonstrate clinical leadership across Birmingham.

With an immediate start available, flexible full-time or part-time working options and an initial three-month contract, this is an excellent opportunity for a specialist clinician seeking their next locum position.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Provide specialist Speech and Language Therapy assessments and interventions for children and young people within community settings across Birmingham.
  • Support the holistic assessment, diagnosis and intervention of children and young people within the Neurodevelopmental Pathway.
  • Deliver highly specialist interventions in line with agreed clinical pathways and packages of care.
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary and multi-agency teams to coordinate care and achieve positive outcomes for children and their families.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with parents, carers, education professionals and other healthcare providers.
  • Use highly developed communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills when working with children, young people, families and professionals.
  • Collaborate with service leads to develop and improve clinical pathways and packages of care within the Neurodevelopmental Pathway.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of the Neurodevelopmental Pathway Team and promote evidence-based clinical practice.
  • Demonstrate clinical leadership and represent the local service at relevant meetings to support service planning and development across the city.
  • Identify training needs within the team and deliver specialist training to colleagues and other professionals where appropriate.
  • Contribute to service quality improvement and promote safe, effective and equitable clinical practice.
  • Where delegated, support the management of waiting lists and active caseloads to help ensure equitable service delivery across Birmingham.

Qualifications and Experience

To be considered for this role, you must have:

  • A recognised degree in Speech and Language Therapy (or equivalent).
  • Current Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration.
  • Relevant experience working as a Paediatric Speech and Language Therapist.
  • Experience providing specialist assessment and intervention for children and young people in community settings.
  • Knowledge and understanding of neurodevelopmental conditions and their impact on speech, language and communication.
  • Experience working collaboratively within multidisciplinary and multi-agency teams.
  • Strong clinical reasoning and the ability to develop and deliver evidence-based intervention plans.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to manage a clinical caseload effectively and work autonomously when required.
  • A proactive approach to service development, clinical governance and continuous professional development.

For Band 7 applicants, experience in highly specialist paediatric practice, clinical leadership, service development and supporting the training and development of other professionals would be particularly advantageous.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
