Responsibilities

Network and Core Infra operations and support

  • Assist with provisioning, configuring and maintaining switches, routers, wireless access points, firewalls, WAN/SD-WAN services, and remote-access and site-to-site VPNs.
  • Provide first- and second-line troubleshooting for wired, wireless, internet, DNS, DHCP, routing switching and connectivity issues, and escalate complex incidents with clear supporting evidence.
  • Support IP address allocation and VLAN administration and keep subnet and IP address management records accurate.
  • Assist with site surveys, equipment installation, cabling checks and post-installation testing for office and network deployments.

Network security operations

  • Support day-to-day firewall administration, including approved rule changes, object updates, NAT, VPN configuration and validation of network segmentation controls.
  • Assist with network access control services, including 802.1X, RADIUS, TACACS+, certificate-based authentication, device profiling and user or endpoint access investigations.
  • Review alerts and logs from firewalls, IDS or IPS, DNS security, monitoring platforms and other network-security tools; perform initial triage and escalate suspected threats.
  • Help maintain secure configuration baselines and identify devices that are missing patches, have configuration drift or require remediation.
  • Apply least-privilege, Zero Trust and security-segmentation principles in all assigned work.

Patching, Firmware and Change Management

  • Apply approved software upgrades, patches and configuration backups to network devices under established change-control procedures.
  • Maintain Synology NAS systems: apply DSM and package updates, monitor drive health (SMART) and RAID/storage pool status, and verify backups before and after patching.
  • Apply BIOS, firmware and driver updates to server hardware on schedule.
  • Update firmware on IoT and meeting room devices, including smart TVs and Logitech conferencing equipment.
  • Schedule patching within approved maintenance windows, test devices afterwards to confirm normal operation, and roll back if issues arise.

Monitoring and incident support

  • Monitor network availability, performance, latency, capacity and security events using the organisation's monitoring platforms.
  • Respond to service alerts, collect diagnostic information, record timelines and work with senior engineers, service providers and vendors to restore service.
  • Contribute technical evidence to incident reviews and help track corrective actions that reduce the risk of recurrence.
  • Participate in out-of-hours support or an on-call rota after suitable training, where required by the team.

Server Room and Physical Infrastructure

  • Conduct routine physical inspections of the server room, covering racks, cabling, power, UPS and cooling.
  • Maintain server room documentation, including rack layouts and equipment inventory.

End-User Hardware Support

  • Diagnose and resolve laptop hardware faults, including screens, keyboards, batteries, chargers, storage, memory, ports and docking stations.
  • Perform hardware replacements, or coordinate warranty claims and RMA processes with vendors.
  • Set up, configure and deploy new laptops and peripherals.

Meeting Room and IoT Support

  • Troubleshoot and maintain meeting room equipment, including TVs, cameras, speakers and Logitech conferencing devices.
  • Perform regular checks so meeting rooms are functional and ready for use.

Projects documentation and collaboration

  • Support infrastructure improvement projects by completing assigned build, test, migration and validation activities against approved designs and implementation plans.
  • Create and maintain network diagrams, device inventories, configuration records, standard operating procedures, knowledge articles and change evidence.
  • Work constructively with IT, security, business teams, telecommunications providers and technology vendors to resolve issues and deliver agreed changes.
  • Develop technical capability through lab work, vendor training, peer review and relevant professional certification study.

Requirements

  • Around 2 to 3 years of relevant experience in network support, infrastructure operations, IT support with networking responsibilities, a placement role, apprenticeship or equivalent hands-on lab experience.
  • Evidence of configuring and troubleshooting networks through employment, study, certification labs, home labs or project work.
  • A relevant certification such as Cisco CCNA, CompTIA Network+ or equivalent knowledge is desirable. Candidates actively working towards certification will also be considered.
  • A degree, higher education qualification or apprenticeship in networking, cyber security, computing or a related subject is useful but not essential where practical ability can be demonstrated.
  • Hands-on experience diagnosing and repairing laptop hardware, including component replacement and peripheral setup.
  • Working knowledge of Windows and/or macOS device setup, imaging and deployment.
  • Basic understanding of server hardware, RAID, storage health monitoring and backup verification.
  • Awareness of server room fundamentals: rack layout, cable management, UPS and cooling.

Desirable exposure

  • Cisco switching and routing; Palo Alto Networks or another next-generation firewall platform; Cisco ISE or another NAC platform.
  • Network monitoring and observability platforms such as ThousandEyes, SolarWinds, Zabbix, Nagios or Meraki Dashboard.
  • IDS or IPS, DNS security such as Cisco Umbrella, SSL or TLS inspection, log correlation and false-positive triage.
  • Synology NAS administration (DSM, storage pools, Hyper Backup or similar).

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
