CDL-A Driver/Operator (Rerail)
Location: Kansas City, MO Job Type: Full-Time | Direct Hire Starting Pay: $26.00/hour; higher pay available depending on experience
Position Summary
We are seeking a Class A CDL Driver/Operator to support railroad derailment response and related operations in the Kansas City region.
This role involves much more than driving. You will transport and operate equipment, assist with rerailing and track-related work, perform minor equipment repairs, and support emergency response operations. Driving makes up approximately 10% of the job.
The position requires someone who is comfortable with a 24/7 on-call schedule and can respond quickly to emergency derailment calls.
Schedule & Compensation
- 40 hours guaranteed per week
- Average of 60+ hours per week, with some weeks reaching 70 hours
- Significant overtime available
- 24/7 on-call availability, including weekends and holidays
- Hours outside of Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–4:00 PM are paid at 1.5x overtime
- Per diem available
- Hotel pay for required travel
- Layover pay when applicable
Responsibilities
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of trucks, trailers, and equipment according to company policy and DOT regulations.
- Drive tractor-trailers to and from job sites and inspect loads and transported machinery.
- Verify transportation permits for overweight and oversize loads and equipment.
- Participate in daily work planning and safety briefings.
- Load, unload, move, and stage materials and equipment for rerailing, load adjustment/transfer, and track maintenance, repair, or new construction.
- Assist with the assembly, inspection, and operation of cranes and other equipment.
- Operate equipment according to standard procedures while following all safety rules and regulations.
- Assist with rigging and connecting chains, cables, and winches during derailment response.
- Operate equipment such as cranes, backhoes, grapple trucks, dump trucks, excavators, bulldozers, front-end loaders, rail-bound equipment, tractors, and skid-steer loaders when qualified.
- Perform work involving hydraulic tools, welding, cutting torches, electrical tools, and common hand tools.
- Assist with specialty lifting, rerailing, load transfer, track maintenance/repair, grading, and railroad construction activities.
- Continuously monitor equipment and vehicles to minimize downtime and maintain operational readiness.
- Perform and document minor equipment and vehicle service and repairs, including basic mechanical tasks such as oil changes.
- Report more complicated mechanical issues to the Shop Manager or Foreman.
- Assist with disassembly and loading of cranes and other equipment after job assignments.
- Restock vehicles and equipment with necessary parts, components, and supplies.
- Sort and properly dispose of scrap materials.
- Assist other departments or divisions as needed to meet operational needs.
- Follow all required safety policies and procedures.
- Maintain vehicles, equipment, tools, and work areas in a clean, organized, and safe condition.
Requirements
- Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL-A) with a good driving record.
- Basic mechanical skills for minor equipment repairs, including oil changes.
- Experience in construction labor or a similar physically demanding role.
- Must be comfortable operating equipment and performing physical labor.
- Must be available 24/7 to respond to emergency service calls, including weekends and holidays.
- Must pass required qualification tests, training, and safety programs.
- Must be comfortable working in an emergency-response environment where quick and efficient work is required.
Preferred Skills & Experience
- 3+ years of experience operating heavy equipment, including: Backhoe Bulldozer Excavator Front-end loader Grapple truck Rail-bound equipment Tractor Skid-steer loader Strong preference for CDL-A drivers with experience operating manual-transmission equipment. Equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
