The posting

The advertisement for the professorship is available from the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.

About the department

The Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Audiology is responsible for the full spectrum of diagnostics and treatment within the ENT and audiological fields, encompassing both general patient care and highly specialized services. A total of more than 100 clinically active physicians is employed within the department. In addition, there is a high level of research activity, including among the clinical staff. The department currently has five formally affiliated professors, three of whom are clinical professors in otorhinolaryngology. As a university hospital department, it also has teaching obligations at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including for healthcare professionals beyond the medical field of both the primary and secondary health sector.

Clinical functions and focus areas of the department

Emphasis is placed on candidates with a robust, long-standing, and continuous research background. The candidate is expected to have extensive knowledge and research experience with head and neck cancer epidemiology and documented experience with national registries and particularly with HPV-driven head and neck cancer. A broad knowledge of benign ENT conditions is also expected. Further the candidate should be active and involved in thyroid cancer research.

The position offers significant opportunities for further specialization and skill development within advanced surgical techniques, including the potential for training in robotic surgery. The consultant will also be expected to take on administrative responsibilities such as patient triage and task coordination.

We offer a dynamic and rewarding position in a busy and active department housed in brand-new, state-of-the-art facilities. The position includes excellent opportunities for involvement in research and clinical development.

Work Schedule: The position includes on-call duty (approximately every 14 days), shared equally among the department’s consultants.

Salary and terms of employment will follow the applicable collective agreement.

The clinical professor is expected to provide academic leadership, facilitate collaboration between hospital departments and regional research environments, and contribute to the development of shared research strategies and priorities across institutions.

In research, the position entails responsibility for initiating, leading, and consolidating high-quality clinical and translational research programmes within head and neck surgery and related disciplines. This includes strengthening existing research groups, promoting multicentre and cross-regional studies, supporting early-career researchers, and ensuring integration of research activities across hospitals within RØST. The professor will play a key role in attracting external funding, enhancing national and international visibility, and embedding research as a core component of clinical practice throughout Eastern Denmark.

In teaching, the position carries responsibility for academic leadership in undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing medical education within otorhinolaryngology and head and neck surgery. The professor will contribute to curriculum development, pedagogical innovation, and supervision at all levels, ensuring alignment between clinical training, academic standards, and regional workforce needs. Teaching activities will be coordinated across clinical sites, thereby supporting a unified and high-quality educational environment for medical students, residents, and fellows within RØST.

Overall, the position is designed to function as a unifying professorship that integrates research, teaching, and clinical excellence across Nordsjællands Hospital, the wider hospital network in RØST, and academic partners, thereby strengthening the academic foundation and future development of the specialty across Eastern Denmark.
