We’re Finding Better Ways to provide materials the world needs, now and in the future. Our values – care, courage and curiosity – guide how we work and how we treat each other.

About the role

We are looking for a Track Inspector to join the Condition Monitoring Team and help maintain the safety, integrity and reliability of our Pilbara heavy haul rail network. In this role, you will inspect rail infrastructure, identify defects and provide clear information that enables timely maintenance decisions. You will work with a close-knit team and a broad range of rail stakeholders across a technically distinctive operating environment.

What you’ll be doing

  • Conduct rail infrastructure inspections using hi-rail vehicles, walking inspections and approved digital track inspection tools and systems.
  • Identify, assess and classify track and rail infrastructure defects in line with Rio Tinto Iron Ore Rail Standards and Codes of Practice.
  • Recommend appropriate maintenance responses and prepare accurate defect and maintenance reports to support safe, timely work execution.
  • Coordinate inspection access and priorities with Planning and Scheduling, Train Control, Asset Health, Rail Operations and maintenance stakeholders.
  • Respond to call-outs and urgent inspection requirements while maintaining effective communication and safe work practices.
  • Record, assign and update maintenance tasks in SAP in accordance with work management requirements and relevant specifications.
  • Comply with health, safety, environment and quality requirements, company policies and site procedures during all inspection activities.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives that strengthen inspection quality, reduce risk and support efficient rail maintenance.

About you

We’re looking for someone whose experience aligns with the key requirements below. You do not need to meet every “helpful for success” item to apply, if you bring relevant experience and are excited by the opportunity, we encourage you to submit an application.

Required for Success

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • A current Australian manual C Class driver’s licence.
  • Capability to inspect rail infrastructure, identify defects and determine or escalate appropriate maintenance requirements against relevant standards and Codes of Practice.
  • Ability to prepare accurate written defect and maintenance reports and communicate inspection findings clearly with operational and maintenance stakeholders.
  • Computer literacy and the ability to use digital inspection systems and SAP to record, assign and track maintenance work.
  • Previous experience as a Track Inspector or in rail infrastructure inspection, maintenance or condition monitoring (ideally 5 years)

Helpful for Success

  • A Certificate III in Rail Infrastructure or another relevant rail qualification.
  • Knowledge of track measuring, inspection and recording equipment.
  • Experience working across a heavy haul rail network or another safety-critical transport environment.
  • Practical problem-solving skills and confidence coordinating work with multiple stakeholders where priorities can change.

What we offer

Be recognised for your contribution, your thinking and your hard work, and go home knowing you’ve helped the world progress.

  • A work environment where safety is always the number one priority
  • A permanent position working directly for Rio Tinto
  • A competitive base salary reflective of your skills and experience with annual incentive program
  • Comprehensive medical benefits including subsidised private health insurance for employees and immediate family
  • Attractive share ownership plan
  • Company provided insurance cover
  • Extensive salary sacrifice & salary packaging options
  • Career development & education assistance to further your technical or leadership ambitions
  • Ongoing access to family-friendly health and medical wellbeing support
  • Leave for all of life’s reasons (vacation/annual, paid parental, personal & cultural leave)
  • Exclusive employee discounts (banking, accommodation, cars, retail and more)
  • Possible domestic relocation assistance

Where you’ll be working

You will be based in Karratha at our 7 Mile rail facility. Our privately owned and operated rail network is an essential part of our integrated production process and services our 16 mines across the Pilbara via 1,700km of track. With depots located at Tom Price, Cape Lambert and Dampier (7 Mile), each train is operated by a single driver and comprises up to three locomotives and 240 ore cars stretching to approximately 2.7 kilometres in length with over 40 trains operating per day. We are also applying and adapting technology to improve safety and productivity across our rail network.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
