The posting
Interim | Hybrid (Rotterdam, 2 days per week on-site) | 36 hours per week | 6 months, with extension options up to 2 years
Our client, a major Dutch public transport organisation, is moving its central data and analytics platform from Azure Synapse to Microsoft Fabric. The platform runs on a lakehouse architecture with a medallion structure and Delta Lake, and feeds data products for asset management, HR and finance. You join the Data Office to deliver that migration and drive the next stage of the platform roadmap.
You work alongside the platform's data engineers, the lead data platform engineer, a solution architect, data analysts and data stewards. You own one or more roadmap items end to end, set the standard for engineering quality, and coach a team that is still building its experience on the platform. Start date is as soon as possible and no later than 2 November 2026.

• You own one or more roadmap priorities, from performance and cost optimisation to data quality and monitoring.
• You build and maintain scalable pipelines and PySpark notebooks across the bronze, silver and gold layers, using a metadata-driven approach.
Data products and modelling
• You design and build dimensional data models, and ingest structured and unstructured data from complex source landscapes.
• You structure and manage the SQL data warehouse on Azure SQL Database and Fabric Database.
• You translate requirements from data analysts and business stakeholders into technical specifications.
Quality and engineering standards
• You implement the data quality framework, checks and cleansing processes across ETL/ELT flows.
• You run CI/CD pipelines in Azure DevOps for automated build, test and deployment, with quality and security controls built in.
• You lead code reviews, document and monitor what you deliver, and solve complex technical issues.
Team and ways of working
• You coach the other data engineers and raise the capability of the team.
• You take the lead in turning epics into features and sharpening user stories within an agile squad.
Job requirements

• Hands-on experience with lakehouse architecture and medallion principles.
• A track record of delivering in complex environments with multiple source systems, dependencies and stakeholders.
• Experience standardising and automating workflows with Azure DevOps, Git and CI/CD.
• Experience in agile teams, including leading the translation of epics into features and challenging engineers on user stories.

• Fluent Dutch and strong English.
• Able to work 2 days per week from the Rotterdam office.
• EU work authorisation.
• Willingness to undergo a background check (VOG).
The following are a plus:
• Building data products on SAP and SuccessFactors data.
• Hands-on experience of a Synapse-to-Fabric migration.
• Experience coaching or leading data engineers on a new platform.
Why this role
You take a live, well-architected lakehouse onto Microsoft Fabric. That migration is one of the most in-demand skill sets in the Dutch data market. Your work directly supports the operational efficiency of a city's public transport network. With up to 2 years of runway and a team ready to learn, you shape both the platform and the people who run it.
