Washington Rural Healthcare CNO Opportunities

Rural Staffing Services partners with rural hospitals, clinics, public hospital districts, and community healthcare organizations throughout Washington to identify nursing leaders who understand both the responsibility and the privilege of leading care in a rural community.

We are currently connecting with experienced nursing executives who may be interested in active and upcoming Chief Nursing Officer and senior nursing leadership opportunities across Washington.

These opportunities may include leadership within:

  • Critical Access Hospitals
  • Rural and community hospitals
  • Rural Health Clinics
  • Federally Qualified Health Centers
  • Public hospital districts
  • Long-term care and senior care organizations
  • Integrated rural healthcare systems

This Is More Than a CNO Role

Rural nursing leadership is deeply connected to the people and community being served.

A rural Chief Nursing Officer may oversee clinical quality, patient safety, regulatory readiness, workforce development, nursing operations, and the daily support of teams working across multiple areas of care. Just as importantly, the CNO helps shape workplace culture and ensures nurses feel heard, valued, and equipped to provide excellent care.

The strongest leaders understand that rural healthcare requires flexibility, creativity, collaboration, and trust. They are visible, approachable, and willing to work closely with frontline employees, medical staff, executive leaders, boards, and community partners.

What You May Lead

Responsibilities will vary by organization and may include:

  • Providing strategic and operational leadership for nursing services
  • Supporting safe, high-quality, patient-centered care
  • Strengthening nursing culture, retention, and employee engagement
  • Developing and mentoring nursing leaders and frontline teams
  • Overseeing staffing, productivity, and nursing workforce planning
  • Supporting regulatory compliance and survey readiness
  • Advancing quality improvement and patient-safety initiatives
  • Collaborating with executive leadership, medical staff, and the governing board
  • Helping the organization respond to the evolving needs of its community

What You Will Bring

Qualifications will vary by opportunity, but organizations may seek:

  • Current Registered Nurse licensure or eligibility for Washington licensure
  • Progressive nursing leadership experience
  • Experience as a CNO, Vice President of Nursing, Chief Clinical Officer, Director of Nursing, or comparable senior leader
  • Strong knowledge of quality, patient safety, regulatory compliance, and nursing operations
  • Experience leading teams through growth, transition, or organizational change
  • Rural, Critical Access Hospital, public hospital district, FQHC, or community healthcare experience
  • A bachelor's degree in nursing or a related field, with a master's degree preferred for some opportunities
  • A collaborative, visible, and relationship-focused leadership style
