Afterhours Support Worker

Sunrise Centre | Darwin, NT Permanent Part Time (16 hours per week, Maximum-Term Contract until 24 January 2028) Casual Opportunities Also Available SCHADS Level 3

Why this role matters

For many people experiencing homelessness, the after-hours period can be one of the most vulnerable times of the day. Feeling safe, supported and connected can make a significant difference to a person's wellbeing, stability and journey towards independence.

As an Afterhours Support Worker with The Salvation Army, you will help create a safe and welcoming environment where residents feel respected, valued and supported outside of business hours. Working with people experiencing homelessness, alcohol and other drug challenges, mental health concerns and other complex needs, you will play an important role in maintaining safety, wellbeing and continuity of support during some of the most critical periods of their recovery and housing journey.

This is an opportunity to be part of a dedicated team that provides more than accommodation. Together, you will help create a place where people can feel secure, build confidence and focus on achieving positive outcomes for their future.

About the role

The Afterhours Support Worker is responsible for supporting the safety, wellbeing and day-to-day needs of residents outside standard business hours. Working within the Sunrise Centre, you will build positive relationships with residents, respond to incidents and emergencies, monitor site security, support resident wellbeing and provide practical assistance to people experiencing homelessness, alcohol and other drug challenges and other complex circumstances.

You will work closely with the broader case management team to ensure continuity of care, maintain accurate records and support residents in line with their individual support plans and the National Homelessness Stream Model of Care.

We are currently recruiting for two opportunities:

  • Permanent part-time position working 16 hours per week on a maximum-term contract until 24 January 2028.
  • Casual Afterhours Support Worker position offering flexible shifts across the roster.

This position within the Sunrise Centre team, reporting to the After-Hours Coordinator. Pay is in accordance with a SCHADS Level 3.

How you will make an impact

  • Provide after-hours support to residents in a safe, respectful and person-centred manner.
  • Build positive and professional relationships with residents that encourage participation and self-determination.
  • Monitor site safety and security, including building activity and CCTV monitoring.
  • Respond to incidents, emergencies and resident welfare concerns in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Support residents with medication administration requirements in line with individual plans and organisational guidelines.
  • Conduct welfare checks and maintain continuity of care through effective communication and handover processes.
  • Assist residents to access support services and community resources where required.
  • Maintain accurate client records, case notes and administrative documentation.
  • Undertake cleaning and minor maintenance tasks to ensure communal areas remain safe and well presented.
  • Contribute to a positive team culture and uphold The Salvation Army's values and standards of practice.

What you will bring

  • Demonstrated experience in a similar support worker, homelessness, alcohol and other drugs (AOD), community services or residential care role.
  • Experience supporting people experiencing homelessness, substance use challenges, mental health concerns, trauma or other complex needs.
  • Certificate III in Community Services, or Certificate IV in Alcohol and Other Drugs, Mental Health or a related discipline.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and exercise sound judgement in challenging situations.
  • Experience responding to incidents, risk and safety concerns.
  • Strong written communication and record-keeping skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Current Northern Territory Driver's Licence.
  • Current Northern Territory Working with Children Clearance (Ochre Card), or ability to obtain prior to commencement.
  • Availability to work morning, afternoon and sleepover shifts as required.

What we offer

  • NFP salary packaging benefits (up to $15,900 tax free) and Entertainment Benefits ($2,650 tax free).
  • Employee Assistance Program providing confidential counselling and support for you and your family.
  • Financial, retail and lifestyle discounts.
  • Discounted health and fitness memberships through Fitness Passport.
  • Up to 8 weeks of leave per year through our purchase leave scheme.
  • Generous parental leave provisions.
  • Up to 5 days paid leave each year to support a Salvation Army program or activity.
  • Ongoing learning and professional development opportunities.
  • A supportive and inclusive team committed to making a meaningful difference in the lives of people experiencing homelessness.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
