Job Description

Sales Intern

At Samuel, we believe every team member brings unique and valuable skills, experiences, and knowledge to our thriving business—enabling us to build on over 165 years of success in the metals industry. We offer opportunities for our team members to develop and grow in their careers, empower them to make decisions on the job, and be part of driving positive change within our organization and the communities where we live and work.

Summary & Scope

This position is designed to provide a college student with practical exposure to the full sales process - from researching prospective customers and identifying growth opportunities to supporting existing accounts and learning how pricing, purchasing, inventory, logistics, and operations come together to serve our customers. The Sales Intern will work closely with the Sales Manager, Inside Sales team, and Outside Sales Representatives while contributing to projects and day-to-day activities that support the growth of the Hermitage business. This is a part-time internship of approximately 12–20 hours per week, generally scheduled between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. We are willing to work around the student's class schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Research prospective customers, markets, and industries to identify potential sales opportunities.
  • Assist the Sales team with researching customer growth targets and new business opportunities.
  • Support prospecting and business development activities.
  • Assist with maintaining and organizing customer and prospect information.
  • Help prepare information for customer meetings, sales calls, and business development discussions.
  • Shadow Inside and Outside Sales Representatives to gain exposure to customer relationship management and the sales process.
  • Assist with sales reporting and analysis to identify trends, opportunities, and areas for growth.
  • Learn how pricing, margins, inventory availability, and customer requirements factor into commercial decisions.
  • Review open customer orders and assist with identifying items requiring follow-up.
  • Expedite purchase orders and inbound material as requested by the Sales team.
  • Enter and maintain expediting notes on purchase orders and related transactions.
  • Audit customer orders to ensure information entered into internal systems aligns with customer purchase orders.
  • Review non-mill buyouts against corresponding sales orders.
  • Evaluate open-order reports and research out-of-range or incomplete data.
  • Review logistics information and manifests to assist with customer order updates.
  • Assist with maintaining accurate customer and ship-to information.
  • Partner with the material claims team to learn how customer and material issues are researched and resolved.
  • Assist with inventory cycle counts and related inventory projects.
  • Work with Operations, Purchasing, Logistics, and other functions to understand how each area supports the customer and sales process.
  • Participate in special sales, customer, and business-development projects as assigned.
  • Provide occasional support to the Safety and Administrative teams as business needs allow.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a college or university program, preferably pursuing a degree in Business, Sales, Marketing, Supply Chain, Finance, or a related field.
  • Interest in sales, business development, customer service, or the metals/manufacturing industry.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Curious, motivated, and comfortable asking questions and learning new concepts.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and follow through on assignments.
  • Comfortable working with data and learning new software and business systems.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Excel, Outlook, and Teams.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

What You'll Gain

This internship provides an opportunity to gain practical experience in a business-to-business sales environment while learning from experienced commercial professionals. The Sales Intern will gain exposure to:

  • Customer relationship management
  • Prospecting and market research
  • Pricing and profitability
  • Sales analytics

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
