      About Us Nestled between the Strait of Georgia and the Sechelt Inlet, Sechelt is a charming seaside community of approximately ten thousand people. Nature of the Position Reporting to the Manager of Public Works and general supervision of the Public Works Foreman, the Utility Operator I assists with all activities related to the constructing, operating and maintaining of roads, stormwater and sanitary infrastructure, parks, airport, wharves, docks and other assets. Duties include general manual labour using hand and powered tools and equipment; installation, maintenance and repair of sewer lines, connections and related infrastructure; repair and installation of wastewater treatment plant and lift station equipment;  inspection, maintenance and repair of the wastewater collection system; maintenance of the stormwater system including clearing catch-basins, culverts, ditches and sewers; responding to emergency call outs pertaining to the wastewater collection system; garbage collection;  and carrying out road repairs such as fixing potholes, minor paving, grading and ditching. The Utility Operator I operates a variety of small powered equipment in addition to  heavy mobile equipment such as a 5-ton dump truck, skid-steer, backhoe, excavator, salt truck, brine truck and snow-plow vehicle.   Required Competencies

Grade 12 diploma (or equivalent)

Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License with air brakes endorsement and clean ICBC driver’s abstract EOCP Level 1 Wastewater Collections Operator certification – or ability to achieve Level 1 within 6 months of employment Minimum one year experience related to the maintenance and repair of public works utilities (or acceptable combination of training and experience)   

Hands-on experience with the operation and maintenance of power and hand tools Experience operating a 5-ton dump truck, bobcat, excavator, backhoe and snow clearing equipment

WHMIS certification Confined Space Entry certification Basic Occupational First Aid certification Working knowledge of the hazards, WorkSafe regulations, safe work procedures and practices pertinent to public works and wastewater collection such as excavations, confined spaces, lock-out procedures, working alone, handling of chemicals and hazardous goods, biohazards, working in traffic and other safety topics as required. Ability to remain calm and react in a competent manner during an emergency while demonstrating excellent decision-making skills Demonstrated initiative and accountability Ability to work cooperatively within a team as well as independently with minimal direction Ability to follow oral and written instructions Ability to proficiently operate the required heavy equipment Excellent oral, written and communication skills with the demonstrated ability to exercise diplomacy, courtesy, tact and respect

Ability to meet the physical demands of the job including working in all weather conditions, including regularly lifting and carrying weights up to 50 lbs

  Preferred Competencies The successful candidate may be expected to receive and maintain RCMP enhanced reliability security clearance; therefore, existing valid enhanced reliability security clearance would be an asset.   Working Conditions This is a regular, full-time unionized position within the BCGEU. The wage is set at Grid Level 8, $35.91 - $41.49 per hour plus an attractive benefits package. Hours of work are 37.5 hours per week, Monday through Friday. This position involves shiftwork, including weekends for snow and ice removal.
