Le SEM est compétent pour toutes les questions relatives au droit des étrangers et au droit d'asile en Suisse. La division du droit de la nationalité, qui relève du domaine de direction \<\< Immigration et intégration \>\>, est un centre de compétences chargé des procédures opérationnelles relatives à l'acquisition et à la perte de la nationalité suisse, ainsi que de l'élaboration des bases politiques et légales spécifiques à ce domaine.
