Overview:
Securian Financial’s Institutional Retirement Solutions (IRS) business is seeking an experienced retirement professional to help shape and expand its growing Longevity business, with a focus on Pension Risk Transfer (PRT) and defined contribution (DC) guaranteed income.
This role combines deep defined benefit (DB) and/or PRT expertise with product development and business strategy. The individual will evaluate complex opportunities and plan provisions, assess product fit, shape product requirements, and partner across Actuarial, Law, Operations, Distribution, and other functions to advance Deferred PRT new business opportunities, PRT buy-in deals, guaranteed income offerings and other emerging Longevity solutions.
The ideal candidate can bridge the technical and business sides of retirement solutions—bringing strong pension expertise and product judgment while helping turn new ideas into scalable capabilities and bring Securian’s next generation of Longevity solutions to market.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Longevity Product & Domain Development
- Apply deep defined benefit pension expertise to complex PRT new business opportunities, including evaluating plan provisions, product fit, requirements, exceptions, and administrative implications in partnership with Actuarial, Operations, and Law.
- Serve as a PRT and defined benefit domain resource for complex opportunities and product questions, helping translate technical pension considerations into business and product decisions.
- Support the continued evolution and expansion of Securian’s Longevity portfolio, including Deferred PRT, PRT buy-ins, defined contribution guaranteed income, and other emerging Longevity solutions.
- Lead and support market and product research, competitive analysis, partner exploration, and business-case development for new and evolving Longevity opportunities.
- Help define product requirements and structures, partnering with Actuarial on feasibility, structure, and pricing considerations and with Law and other functions on contractual and implementation requirements.
- Develop repeatable product knowledge, standards, and guidance that allow routine activity to transition to appropriate functional teams while maintaining specialized expertise for complex situations.
Capability Development & Execution
- Translate approved Longevity strategies and product direction into the operating, process, data, technology, vendor, control, and organizational capabilities required to deliver them successfully and at scale.
- Lead current-state and gap assessments, help define future-state capabilities, and coordinate cross-functional execution from design through implementation, testing, readiness, and transition.
- Assess the operating and business implications of new products and growth initiatives and advise leadership on capability gaps, dependencies, implementation alternatives, resource needs, and tradeoffs.
- Lead or support partner and vendor evaluation, implementation, and integration, coordinating across IRS, enterprise partners, and external organizations.
- Establish scalable processes, standards, documentation, controls, and clear functional ownership as new capabilities mature and transition into ongoing operations.
- Work across Actuarial, Operations, Law, Technology, Distribution, Finance, and other teams to drive complex initiatives forward without replacing the expertise or decision rights of those functions.
Qualifications:
- Significant experience with defined benefit pension plans and/or Pension Risk Transfer, with strong knowledge of complex plan provisions and their implications for product structure, pricing, administration, and contracts.
- Experience in PRT, pension consulting, actuarial, retirement product development, institutional retirement, or a related field.
- Ability to interpret complex pension and product issues and translate them into practical product, business, and implementation decisions.
- Demonstrated ability to partner effectively with technical specialists, including Actuarial, Law, Operations, and Technology, while connecting their expertise to broader business objectives.
- Strong cross-functional leadership skills with demonstrated ability to influence and drive execution without direct authority.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, planning, and stakeholder-management skills.
- Ability to operate effectively with ambiguity, exercise sound judgment, and manage multiple complex priorities.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Direct experience with PRT transactions involving deferred participants, complex DB plan provisions, and/or PRT buy-ins.
- Experience working with pension consultants, plan sponsors, intermediaries, administrators, or other institutional retirement-market participants.
- Experience developing or launching new retirement products or expanding existing products into new markets or transaction types.
- Experience evaluating markets, products, and business opportunities and developing product requirements, business cases, and implementation approaches.
- Experience leading complex initiatives from concept and design through implementation and operational readiness.
- Working knowledge of operating-model and process design, technology, data, automation, vendor solutions, and operational controls.
- Familiarity with defined contribution retirement-income solutions is beneficial but not required.
