Our specialised technical expertise, proven track record in Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Management (EPC and EPCM) delivery and our advanced commercial capabilities enable us to provide complete solutions which are valued by our clients. Sedgman is a wholly owned subsidiary of CIMIC Group Limited, one of the world's leading international contractors and the world's largest contract miner.

The expertise and enthusiasm of our people and professional, friendly atmosphere is paramount to our continued success.

Sedgman is proud to offer an exciting opportunity for a Cadet Designer to join our Brisbane team.

Whether you're currently studying Mechanical Engineering, have recently completed a qualification, or are looking to kick-start your career in design, this role offers a fantastic opportunity to learn from industry experts while working on large-scale mining and resource projects.

As a member of our multidisciplinary drafting team, you'll gain hands-on experience across Structural, Mechanical and Piping (SMP) design, working alongside experienced engineers and designers on major minerals processing projects. You'll develop practical design skills, gain exposure to industry-leading 3D modelling software and build the foundations for a long-term career in engineering and design.

Key Accountabilities

  • Assist in the development of detailed 3D Structural, Mechanical and Piping (SMP) designs using Autodesk Plant Design software.
  • Produce engineering drawings and technical documentation under the guidance of experienced designers and engineers.
  • Gain exposure to the design of materials handling systems, process plant equipment, piping systems and supporting structures.
  • Work within project budgets and schedules while maintaining accurate project records.
  • Support multidisciplinary project teams across a range of engineering and design activities.
  • Develop an understanding of SMP design standards, specifications and industry best practices.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of drafting systems, processes and project documentation.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and continuous learning opportunities.
  • Build your technical capability and progress toward delivering increasingly complex SMP designs.

What You Bring

  • Completion of at least one year (full-time equivalent) of an Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree in Engineering.
  • OR completion of at least one year (full-time equivalent) of a Certificate IV in Engineering for trade-qualified applicants.
  • A genuine interest in Structural, Mechanical and Piping (SMP) design, engineering or drafting.
  • Strong attention to detail and a willingness to learn.
  • Good problem-solving skills and mechanical aptitude.
  • Exposure to AutoCAD, Inventor, MicroStation or similar drafting software will be highly regarded.
  • Competent Microsoft Office skills.
  • A positive attitude and desire to build a long-term career within a leading engineering organisation.

What We Can Offer You

  • A structured entry-level career pathway with ongoing mentoring and development.
  • Hands-on exposure to Structural, Mechanical and Piping (SMP) design on major mining and minerals processing projects.
  • Exposure to leading-edge design technology and 3D modelling software.
  • The opportunity to learn from experienced engineers and designers across multiple disciplines.
  • A supportive and collaborative team environment that encourages growth.
  • Work-life balance and flexible working arrangements where appropriate.
  • Long-term career opportunities within Sedgman and the broader CIMIC Group.
  • Access to employee benefits, discounts and development programs.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.

What if my background isn't good enough?

We make the most of the background you have. The CV uses every piece of relevant proof your profile holds, and one of the 25 readers reads your whole profile and flags what the CV left out.

Is it a subscription?
