SEH has an opening for a Structural/Bridge Engineer within our Structural Practice. This position may be based in our Denver office or at a remote work location in Colorado or Arizona. The successful candidate will support an established bridge design and inspection practice serving projects throughout Colorado and the Western United States.
Responsibilities May Include:
- Performing structural analysis and design of transportation structures, including bridges, culverts, retaining walls, and ancillary structures using a variety of different structural material types including steel, reinforced concrete, precast/prestressed concrete, and other materials.
- Preparing engineering reports, including existing structure assessments, feasibility studies, and structure selection reports.
- Performing bridge and culvert inspections and load ratings.
- Preparing structural calculations and load rating packages using software such as Bentley OpenBridge, RISA, L-Pile, AASHTOWare BrR, BRASS, and similar structural analysis programs.
- Applying AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications and applicable state and agency design manuals.
- Preparing structural construction specifications.
- Developing quantity takeoffs and construction cost estimates for structural elements.
- Reviewing shop drawings, RFIs, and contractor submittals during construction.
- Collaborating with structural engineers, technicians, and other disciplines on multidisciplinary transportation projects.
- Coordinating and communicating with clients, agencies, contractors, and other project stakeholders as appropriate.
- Visiting project sites, construction sites, and precast concrete plants, primarily within Colorado and Arizona, to evaluate existing structures, assess new project sites, and observe construction activities and precast concrete fabrication processes.
- Performing field work that may require lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in structural engineering.
- Strong understanding of structural engineering fundamentals and design practices.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required; Colorado and/or Arizona licensure preferred, with licensure in other states considered a plus.
- Candidates are expected to have an updated NCEES record within 6 months of hire.
- Knowledge of structural steel, reinforced concrete, and prestressed concrete design.
- Experience with commonly used structural analysis and design software such as Bentley OpenBridge, RISA, and L-Pile.
- Familiarity with AASHTO bridge design requirements and CDOT and/or ADOT design criteria.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment.
- ACI and PCI concrete testing certification preferred, or the ability to become certified within 12 months of hire.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for occasional project-related travel.
- Ability to travel as needed for project meetings, inspections, and site visits. Occasional overnight travel may be required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Minimum of 5 years of structural analysis and design experience.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred in Colorado and/or Arizona
Future Career Opportunity
This position is intended to provide opportunities for both continued technical development and increased project leadership responsibility. It is preferred that the successful candidate develops toward a Project Manager role within approximately 3 to 5 years of hire, with the goal of independently managing multidisciplinary bridge and structural projects. SEH will support this progression through internal mentorship, project management training, increased client interaction, and progressive responsibility for contracting, project scope, schedule, budget, multidisciplinary and subconsultant coordination, and overall project delivery.
