The posting

HdL Companies is seeking a technically credible audit and revenue leader to lead its Audit Services organization. As Director of Audit Services, you'll manage a revenue-generating professional-services operation with approximately 18 professionals, reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer. This role offers full accountability for technical quality, productivity, client outcomes, and profit-and-loss performance.

For over 40 years, HdL has helped more than 900 local government agencies maximize the revenue that funds their communities. As a private, employee-owned firm, HdL serves cities, counties, and special districts across 8 states with an exceptional 99.6% client-retention rate. Audit and revenue recovery sit at the heart of HdL's value proposition—the company's audits have recovered billions of dollars for local government clients by identifying reporting and allocation errors. The company's culture is anchored in core values: Deliver Excellence in Everything, Do the Right Thing, Foster Relationships, Give Generously, Enjoy the Journey, and Be Authentic, Grateful, and Humble.

The ideal candidate is a technically credible audit and revenue leader who can run Audit Services as a disciplined private-sector business operation. This leader brings direct, substantive expertise in tax and revenue audits and recovery, with command of audit and recovery methodologies, quality control, and revenue identification, and the credibility to lead professional and technical staff. Equally important is a business mindset—the successful candidate connects audit productivity and quality to financial results, client outcomes, margins, utilization, and growth, and builds metrics and management systems rather than relying on anecdotal performance judgments. Sound judgment in balancing revenue recovery, accuracy, taxpayer relationships, and business performance is essential. Because HdL's clients are cities, counties, and public agencies, strong credibility with municipal finance and executive stakeholders is critical. Experience serving local governments—whether as a public employee, consultant, or practice leader—is highly valued, and a crossover background with strong technical depth would be particularly attractive.

The salary range for this position is $161,393–$220,000, DOQ.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
