Shift4 is looking for a Full Stack Software Engineer to join the Financial Systems Experience team. This role will design, build, support, and improve critical applications, integrations, reporting workflows, and data-driven tools used across Finance, Accounting, FinOps, Revenue Operations, and related business teams.
This is a full stack engineering role with a heavy data engineering focus. The ideal candidate is comfortable moving between front-end application work, backend services, SQL, data pipelines, financial data models, and production support. They should be able to contribute directly to application development while also strengthening the reliability, accuracy, scalability, and auditability of the financial data flows that support billing, payments, fees, merchant reporting, month-end close, and stakeholder self-service.
This person will also help provide technical partnership for front-end development work, ensuring financial systems applications are maintainable, performant, secure, and aligned with business needs.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, deploy, and support full stack applications for Shift4’s Financial Systems team.
- Build and maintain backend services, database logic, and integrations that support financial operations workflows.
- Develop and optimize SQL, stored procedures, data pipelines, reporting datasets, and data validation routines for high-volume financial data.
- Partner with front-end engineers to review application architecture, code quality, UI behavior, data contracts, and integration patterns.
- Contribute to front-end development.
- Support systems and workflows related to billing, payments, and other internal financial platforms.
- Diagnose and resolve production issues involving application behavior, data quality, integrations, performance, and financial output accuracy.
- Build solutions that are scalable, secure, auditable, and maintainable in a financial systems environment.
- Collaborate with business analysts, QA, TPMs, finance stakeholders, data teams, and other engineering groups to translate complex business requirements into reliable technical solutions.
- Create clear technical documentation, including data models, process flows, integration logic, validation rules, and support notes.
- Improve engineering standards around testing, code review, observability, deployment readiness, and data quality controls.
- Identify opportunities to automate manual financial operations processes and reduce recurring support or reporting burden.
- Use AI-assisted development and automation tools responsibly to improve productivity, testing, troubleshooting, and documentation quality.
Minimum Qualifications
- 3+ years of professional software engineering experience.
- Experience with backend development in .NET, C#, VB.NET, Java, Python, Node.js, or similar languages.
- Strong SQL experience, preferably with Microsoft SQL Server, including stored procedures, query optimization, data validation, and troubleshooting.
- Experience building or supporting data pipelines, ETL/ELT processes, reporting datasets, or large-scale operational data workflows.
- Experience developing or reviewing front-end applications using React, TypeScript, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, or similar technologies.
- Understanding of SDLC practices, Git-based development, code review, testing, deployment, and production support.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex application and data issues independently.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to finance, operations, and non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience writing clear documentation for code, data flows, system behavior, and operational support.
- Ability to work in an agile environment and manage work across multiple business-critical priorities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with financial systems, fintech, payments, billing, residuals, revenue operations, accounting operations, or ERP platforms.
- Strong understanding of financial data quality, audit controls, compliance-sensitive workflows, and reconciliation processes.
- Experience modernizing legacy applications, SQL-heavy systems, or manual finance operations workflows.
- Experience supporting month-end close, billing cycles, merchant reporting, pricing logic, fee configuration, or financial reporting.
- Experience mentoring engineers or serving as a senior technical reviewer for application and data engineering work.
- Experience with observability, logging, alerting, performance tuning, and production incident response.
- Payments, restaurant technology, POS, merchant acquiring, or revenue operations experience is a plus.
What Success Looks Like
- Financial systems applications are more reliable, maintainable, and easier to support.
- Critical financial data flows are accurate, documented, validated, and scalable.
- Front-end work has stronger technical review, cleaner integration patterns, and better long-term maintainability.
- Business stakeholders get solutions that reduce manual work, improve visibility, and support accurate financial outcomes.
- The team raises its engineering standards without slowing delivery.
