Position Summary The Electrician Lead is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and inspecting electrical systems and equipment throughout the University's campus. This position supports the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of academic, residential, administrative, athletic, and healthcare facilities. The Electrician Lead performs skilled electrical work in accordance with applicable codes, regulations, and University standards while contributing to preventative maintenance programs, emergency response activities, energy conservation initiatives, and continuous operational improvement efforts. Principal Duties & Responsibilities
Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electrical systems and equipment including:
Power distribution systems Lighting and lighting controls Emergency power systems Motor controls Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) Transformers Switchgear and panelboards Fire alarm interfaces Electrical components associated with HVAC and mechanical systems
Diagnose electrical issues using testing and diagnostic equipment and implement corrective actions. Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on electrical systems and equipment. Install new electrical circuits, conduit, wiring, fixtures, outlets, and equipment as required. Inspect campus facilities and equipment to identify deficiencies, safety concerns, and maintenance needs. Read and interpret:

Respond to service requests and emergency calls promptly and professionally. Support campus construction, renovation, and capital improvement projects. Maintain compliance with National Electrical Code (NEC), Connecticut State Electrical Code, OSHA regulations, and University standards. Coordinate work activities with Facilities Operations staff, contractors, vendors, and campus stakeholders. Utilize Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) to document work, labor, materials, and equipment history. Assist with operating and maintaining emergency generators and associated transfer switch systems. Participate in on-call rotation as required and respond to after-hours emergencies. Support University sustainability and energy conservation initiatives through efficient operation and optimization of electrical systems. Maintain inventory of electrical materials, tools, and supplies. Perform other tasks assigned by the manager to meet the university's needs.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Other Attributes
High school diploma or equivalent required; accredited electrical trade school, vocational program, apprenticeship program, or equivalent technical training preferred. Connecticut E-1 Unlimited Electrical Journeyperson License required. Minimum 5 years of commercial, institutional, healthcare, or higher education electrical experience preferred. Strong knowledge of electrical theory, power distribution systems, motor controls, and electrical safety practices. Thorough understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and applicable state and local codes. Experience working with generators, transfer switches, and uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems preferred. Knowledge of lockout/tagout procedures and electrical safety standards. Familiarity with Building Management Systems (BMS/BAS) preferred. Proficiency with computers, mobile devices, and work order management systems. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Strong communication and customer service skills. Ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Unusual Working Conditions
Exposure to energized electrical equipment and circuits while performing testing, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair activities. Work may be performed in electrical and mechanical rooms, utility tunnels, crawl spaces, above-ceiling areas, confined spaces, rooftops, and other restricted-access areas. Exposure to varying environmental conditions, including heat, cold, humidity, dust, noise, vibration, and inclement weather. Required use of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including arc-flash protective clothing, insulated gloves, safety glasses, hard hats, hearing protection, and other safety equipment as required. Work may involve climbing ladders, scaffolding, and personnel lifts; working at heights; and working around high-voltage electrical distribution equipment, generators, transformers, switchgear, and transfer switches. Must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull electrical equipment, materials, tools, and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds, with assistance for heavier items. Must be available to respond to electrical and life-safety emergencies and participate in an on-call rotation, which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, planned utility shutdowns, and other work outside normal business hours. Must be able to safely perform work in occupied campus facilities while minimizing disruption to University operations.
