The Position

  • Provide clinical and operational leadership to the nursing team, promoting safe, high-quality and patient-centred care.
  • Oversee the day-to-day management of the unit, including patient flow, staffing, clinical priorities and resource allocation.
  • Lead, support and develop nursing staff, fostering a collaborative, accountable and high-performing team environment.
  • Provide clinical guidance and support to staff, exercising sound judgement when managing complex patient care and operational matters.
  • Manage staffing and rostering requirements, maintaining appropriate skill mix and safe staffing levels.
  • Promote best practice in clinical care, medication safety, infection prevention and control, clinical documentation and compliance with relevant policies and procedures.
  • Support the orientation, education and professional development of nursing staff and students, encouraging ongoing learning and competency development.
  • Foster a culture of effective communication, professional practice, accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Contribute to clinical governance, quality improvement, risk management and patient safety initiatives.
  • Implement hospital and departmental objectives, policies and procedures to support effective service delivery.
  • Work collaboratively with medical, allied health and other multidisciplinary teams to deliver coordinated patient care.
  • Monitor service performance and identify opportunities to improve clinical processes, patient outcomes and the overall patient experience.
  • Act as a senior clinical resource and advocate for patients, staff and the broader multidisciplinary team.

About You

You will hold current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (AHPRA) as a Registered Nurse, with demonstrated clinical experience in a relevant acute care setting, such as medical, surgical and/or rehabilitation nursing. You will bring demonstrated clinical leadership experience, with the ability to lead, support and develop a diverse nursing team while balancing patient care requirements with operational responsibilities. Experience in a Nurse Unit Manager, Associate Nurse Unit Manager, Clinical Nurse or equivalent senior nursing role will be highly regarded.

With strong clinical knowledge and sound judgement, you will be confident managing competing priorities, supporting staff through clinical challenges and building effective relationships across multidisciplinary teams. You will be committed to delivering compassionate, patient-centred care and maintaining high standards of clinical practice.

To succeed in this role, you will demonstrate:

  • Strong clinical leadership and people management skills.
  • Experience leading, supporting and developing nursing staff.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive working relationships across multidisciplinary teams.
  • A commitment to clinical governance, quality improvement and patient safety.
  • The ability to foster a positive workplace culture that supports accountability, collaboration and professional development.
  • A commitment to ongoing learning and contemporary nursing practice.

Above all, patients will be at the core of everything you do, as you commit to and support our Mission and Values.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced nurse leader to make a meaningful contribution at St John of God Geelong Hospital, supporting a dedicated clinical team and helping deliver high-quality care to patients and the local community.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
