The posting

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, which manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Engineering Manager, Services based in Canada.

We are seeking a high-impact Engineering Manager to lead a team responsible for building and operating the backend services, APIs, and integrations that power a technology platform serving independent restaurants. In this role, you will combine strong technical judgment with people leadership to turn complex challenges into clear priorities and measurable customer outcomes. You will guide architectural decisions, strengthen engineering practices, and help deliver reliable, scalable services across a distributed environment. Working closely with Product, Design, Data, and Operations, you will ensure engineering efforts translate into meaningful business value. You will also develop a high-performing team by encouraging ownership, accountability, and continuous growth. This is a hands-on leadership opportunity for someone who thrives in fast-moving environments and knows how to create clarity, momentum, and lasting impact.

Accountabilities

  • Own customer and business outcomes by partnering with Product, Design, Data, and Operations to identify high-value problems and define measurable success indicators.
  • Set technical direction and guide architecture and engineering decisions across the services owned by the team, balancing delivery speed, reliability, simplicity, and long-term system health.
  • Lead teams working with backend technologies such as Python, Go, and Ruby, as well as APIs, distributed systems, asynchronous workflows, databases, AWS, and production infrastructure.
  • Oversee service migrations, reliability improvements, security, performance, observability, and production operations.
  • Build a high-agency engineering team by providing clear context, decision-making boundaries, meaningful ownership, and the support needed to deliver independently.
  • Remove obstacles, collaborate across organizational boundaries, and help engineers find practical solutions rather than relying solely on escalation.
  • Raise execution standards by encouraging frequent delivery of valuable improvements while maintaining quality and reducing unnecessary processes.
  • Use customer feedback, product data, incident reviews, and operational metrics to evaluate outcomes and continuously improve team performance.
  • Recruit, develop, and retain exceptional engineering talent, recognizing potential across both traditional and unconventional career backgrounds.
  • Coach engineers at different experience levels, identify future leaders, recognize strong performance, and address performance concerns constructively and promptly.
  • Build strong relationships with engineering, product, and business leaders, influencing decisions through sound judgment, collaboration, and demonstrated results.
  • Encourage open communication, constructive disagreement, and shared accountability, ensuring decisions prioritize customers and the broader business.
  • Establish clear written communication and decision-making practices that support effective collaboration across geographically distributed teams.
  • Proven experience building and operating customer-facing software products, platforms, or backend services.
  • Previous experience managing and developing high-performing engineering teams.
  • Strong technical judgment across backend services, APIs, distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, and production operations.
  • Experience with Python, Go, Ruby, or comparable backend programming languages and technologies.
  • Understanding of databases, asynchronous workflows, AWS, observability, service reliability, security, and performance optimization.
  • Demonstrated ability to guide technical architecture and engineering decisions while remaining connected to implementation details.
  • A track record of improving customer outcomes alongside engineering productivity, quality, and operational effectiveness.
  • Ability to turn ambiguous and complex problems into clear priorities, technical direction, and actionable plans.
  • A resourceful, decisive, and intellectually curious mindset, with the ability to make progress without waiting for perfect conditions.
  • Strong judgment in identifying opportunities for leverage and balancing rapid execution with the need for deeper technical investment.
  • Confidence to challenge assumptions, question ineffective approaches, and remain open to feedback and different perspectives.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • A collaborative, low-ego leadership style combined with high standards, direct feedback, and strong personal accountability.
  • Ability to lead and support teams distributed across Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and North Macedonia through thoughtful asynchronous communication and inclusive decision-making.
  • Competitive base salary ranging from CAD $150,000 to $175,000, plus benefits.
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Flexible working hours.
  • Generous paid time-off policies.
  • Employee well-being allowance for eligible employees.
  • Market-leading maternity and paternity benefits.
  • Remote work arrangement, with the role available in Canada, the United Kingdom, or North Macedonia.
  • Opportunity to lead impactful engineering initiatives and influence technical direction across a growing organization.
  • Collaborative, international working environment with opportunities for professional development and team leadership.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
