Senior/Associate Geochemist – Australia

About the business and role

SLR Consulting is an employee-controlled international environmental consultancy with a globally recognised reputation for providing high-quality tailored services. With offices throughout the Asia Pacific, Europe, Middle East & Africa and Americas regions, SLR Consulting is one of a very small number of leading international specialist environmental consultancies. SLR currently comprises over 4,500 staff across our global regions, with 35+ Technical Disciplines covering Engineering, Environmental, Scientific and Advisory Services. In the Asia Pacific region, SLR has over 1,200 employees located throughout 24 offices.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an ambitious and experienced Geochemist to join SLR’s Soils, Geochemistry, Toxicology & Risk team with flexibility in one of the Australian offices. We’re looking for a like-minded individual who enjoys working with an enthusiastic, committed, and fun-loving team, is a good listener, and enjoys solving issues for clients.

After a recent surge of growth and looking to diversify our work with driven consultants, and great working culture among the group in aiming for balanced work lives this has resulted in the need for more staff. Reporting to the Practice Manager, you will be working very closely with the multidisciplinary team across Asia-Pacific including technical specialists comprising geochemists, geomorphologists, soil scientists, risk assessors, chemists, and landform engineers to deliver quality Geochemistry services to our clients.

Job tasks & Responsibilities

This role will provide you with the opportunity to work alongside industry leaders across the region and provide you with support for your technical growth within the wider SLR team. With a passion for Geochemistry, you will work with like-minded individuals, whilst enjoying excellent career opportunities across a range of industry sectors.

As a self-starter, you will be able to display confidence and high-level project management skills, including tender and proposal preparation, data analysis and interpretation, and reporting. Additionally, you would be expected to work with the team to identify opportunities for growth, leading with team resourcing and development, and act as a professional role model for staff across the team with a caring and compassionate nature.

Skills & Experience

You will ideally bring circa 5-10 years’ experience as a geochemist or geologist. The ideal candidate will demonstrate experience in many of the following areas, with additional experience in related disciplines considered advantageous:

  • Providing specialist knowledge in environmental geochemistry, mine waste characterisation (including static and kinetic testing), and developing management solutions for projects from exploration through to closure and rehabilitation.
  • Managing complex projects, ensuring they are completed on time, within budget and to high standards.
  • Acting as a primary point of contact for clients, building client relationships and developing new business.
  • Advising on mine closure planning, landform design, pre-feasibility, feasibility, due diligence, environmental impact assessments (EIA) and regulatory compliance.
  • Providing direction for field and laboratory analytical programs.
  • Guiding and supervising junior staff, supporting technical leads within the team, reviewing technical reports, and fostering a culture of technical excellence.
  • Writing technical reports and developing deliverables and integrating geochemical investigations into broader multidisciplinary studies where needed.
  • Undertaking business development and marketing activities to generate project work and promoting geochemistry team growth.
  • Developing collaborative relationships across business units to support multidisciplinary project delivery and identify new opportunities.
  • An understanding of mine-impacted water chemistry, including Acid and Metalliferous Drainage (AMD), and associated management and mitigation strategies.
  • An understanding of mining methods, mine planning processes, and the operational drivers that influence mine waste management and closure outcomes.
  • Experience with geochemical modelling and data assessment tools (e.g. PHREEQC, GWB, ioGAS) and predictive water quality assessments.
  • Familiarity with mine closure planning and mine waste management frameworks.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
