The posting

As a salvage master you can make your mark in the dynamic and high-stakes field of marine salvage, managing emergency response - and wreck removal projects. Your mission is to protect the environment while safeguarding the vessel and its cargo, often under intense and challenging conditions.

Your will lead a team of dedicated salvage professionals that typically includes a salvage supervisor, an salvage engineer, a naval architect and other specialists tailored to the project’s needs. Together, your focus will be on swiftly stabilizing situations, whether that means keeping a vessel afloat, extinguishing fires, coordinating tugs or managing fuel and cargo. Success in this role requires making critical decisions, acting decisively and always prioritizing safety. This is your chance to leave a lasting impact in one of the most exciting and essential areas of the maritime industry.

Your responsibilities as a salvage master

  • Lead Salvage Operations: Manage the safe and successful execution of salvage projects ensuring they meet safety, quality, time and financial objectives as well as client and SMIT Salvage specifications.
  • Project Planning: Oversee the preparation of operational salvage project plans to ensure readiness and efficiency.
  • Risk and Opportunity Management: Identify and address risks during operations while proactively seeking opportunities to optimize project performance.
  • Progress Monitoring and Reporting: Track and report project progress to clients, local authorities and internal stakeholders. Develop and share close-out reports, including lessons learned, to enhance future operations.
  • Quality and Safety Assurance: Up-hold high-quality standards and prioritize safety in all aspects of project execution.
  • Team Deployment: Assess and manage the allocation of internal staff and hired personnel to ensure optimal team performance.

In addition to your operational responsibilities, you will have a significant commercial role. This includes contributing to the preparation of commercial proposals, initiating business opportunities and representing SMIT Salvage throughout the project lifecycle - before, during and after - while engaging with clients, (sub)contractors and other stakeholders.

Your qualities You are a seasoned salvage professional who has already earned your spurs in the profession and you are ready for a new step in your career. You don't want to just take a step. You want a role that does justice to both your operational and commercial knowledge about ship salvage. We don't have to tell you that a flexible attitude is required to be successful in the role of salvage master. After all, you never know where and when a ship will run into problems. In stressful situations you keep a cool head and you always focus on the safety of the people who work for and with us. Beside:

  • You have completed a higher vocational education in a nautical-technical direction.
  • You have at least 10 years of work experience in the maritime industry or 5 years in a similar role as a salvage master.
  • You are a strong analytical thinker, able to compile and analyze information by using a rationalistic and systematic approach to understand issues.
  • You are a strong decision-maker, able to take decisions based on analysis, knowledge, experience and judgment
  • You have excellent problem solving skills, you analyze problems, identify solutions and take actions to prevent or solve the problem at hand.
  • You have experience with financial reporting and budgeting.
  • You have experience with cross-culture working and leadership.
  • You have a perfect command of the English language in word and writing.
  • Are you willing to travel abroad frequently and on demand.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
