Job Title: Technical Support Specialist - New Machines

Location: Immingham Contract: Full Time, Permanent

About the Role

At SMT GB, we're committed to delivering Volvo Construction Equipment that performs at the highest standard from the moment it reaches our customers. To support this commitment, we're looking for an experienced Technical Support Specialist - New Machines to join our New Machine Preparation Centre in Immingham.

This is a highly specialist technical role where you will act as the lead authority for machine preparation, commissioning, diagnostics and technical problem resolution. Working closely with Product Managers, Technical Support teams and preparation engineers, you'll provide expert guidance on complex machine issues, software integration, machine configuration and root cause investigations.

As the recognised subject matter expert within the operation, you'll play a key role in supporting engineers, improving machine reliability, enhancing preparation processes and ensuring every machine is configured and delivered to the highest possible standard. This is an excellent opportunity for a Volvo Construction Equipment specialist who enjoys solving complex challenges and influencing technical excellence across the business.

Key Responsibilities

As the lead technical specialist within the New Machine Preparation Centre, you will provide expert support across a wide range of Volvo Construction Equipment products and technologies.

You'll act as the primary escalation point for complex diagnostics, commissioning activities and machine preparation issues, supporting engineers with advanced fault finding across mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, electronic and software-controlled systems. Working closely with Product Managers, Technical Support teams and Volvo representatives, you'll investigate recurring issues, undertake root cause analysis and implement effective corrective actions that improve machine reliability and performance.

The role also involves ensuring machines are correctly configured, commissioned and updated in line with the latest technical bulletins, software releases and manufacturer requirements. You'll support modifications, accessory installations, system integrations and the implementation of new technologies, while providing coaching and technical guidance to preparation engineers to strengthen capability across the team.

In addition, you'll produce technical reports, engineering feedback and OEM submissions, using diagnostic findings and performance data to identify improvement opportunities and drive quality standards throughout the preparation process.

About You

You'll be a highly skilled technical professional with a passion for engineering excellence and a proven ability to solve complex technical challenges.

Most importantly, you will bring extensive Volvo Construction Equipment experience and be recognised as a technical expert within the industry. You'll enjoy supporting others, sharing knowledge and using your expertise to continuously improve machine quality, reliability and customer outcomes.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Extensive knowledge of the Volvo Construction Equipment product range, including machine systems, diagnostics, commissioning processes and software applications.
  • Significant hands-on experience working with Volvo Construction Equipment and associated OEM diagnostic tools.
  • Advanced diagnostic and fault-finding capability across Volvo mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, electronic and CAN-bus systems.

You will also possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to understand system behaviour and diagnose complex faults at a deep technical level. You'll be confident interpreting technical schematics, wiring diagrams, hydraulic circuits and software configurations, while producing clear and concise reports for engineering, product management and manufacturer stakeholders.

Strong communication skills are essential, as you'll be working closely with Product Management, Engineering, Sales, Service and Technical teams across the business. You'll be proactive, collaborative and focused on continuous improvement, with the ability to manage multiple technical priorities while maintaining exceptional attention to detail.

A full UK Driving Licence is required, together with flexibility to travel, attend training in the UK and overseas, and occasionally stay away from home when business needs require.

What's in it for You?

Alongside a competitive salary, you'll benefit from a range of rewards and benefits designed to support your wellbeing, finances and career development, including a Health Cash Plan, enhanced family-friendly policies, matched pension contributions, employee discounts, ongoing training and development, and recognition through our Caring, Daring, Sharing awards programme. Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
