Job Description

Job Summary

This position is on the Permitting and Siting team in the Environmental Affairs and Sustainability (EA&S) Department. This is a fast pace, growth area for the company. The Environmental Permitting & Siting Engineer/Specialist will work with Southern Company’s operating companies (OPCOs) Environmental Affairs organizations on environmental permitting, generation siting, and compliance. Responsibilities will include multi-media environmental regulatory evaluations and permitting with a focus on Clean Air Act air permitting, environmental compliance support, and due diligence activities for new and existing electric generating units. This position will also participate in cross functional teams, work with external parties, and engage in other areas of EA&S. This position will work with employees across numerous functional areas, including Technical Shared Services, legal (internal & external), Research and Development, Fuels, Planning, Commercial Operations, and external consultants.

Job Requirements

Education and Work Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or relevant scientific discipline from an accredited 4-year college required
  • Master’s degree and professional certificates in related field desired
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) desired
  • Experience in environmental permitting or compliance is preferred
  • Experience in air permitting and compliance desired.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong analytical, problem solving, and decision-making abilities
  • Knowledge of federal/state environmental regulations and compliance requirements for air, land or water media desired
  • Familiar with power generation, plant operations and emission control technologies desired
  • Ability to take initiative, think strategically, and solve problems with strong customer focus
  • Demonstrated good project management and organizational skills
  • Effective communication of complex topics both orally and written
  • Ability to work in a team environment with diverse disciplines and backgrounds
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams)
  • Working knowledge of PivotTables, macros, VBA and SQL is desired

Job Responsibilities

  • Manage and/or prepare environmental multi-media permit applications and supporting documentation for existing, new, and modified emission sources
  • Oversee and manage consultants for air dispersion modeling and/or permitting projects
  • Assist with regulatory applicability with a focus on NSR, emissions calculations, and compliance support
  • Provide environmental expertise for generation siting, generation development and business development functions
  • Manage environmental due diligence reviews of potential new generation sources
  • Support other department activities including environmental reporting, strategy, and policy development
  • Answer management questions on permitting, growth implications on air quality and other key topics
