St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners is seeking a Forensic Technician for the District Twenty-Three Medical Examiner’s Office (St. Johns, Flagler and Putnam counties are covered by District 23) located in beautiful St. Augustine, Florida.
We are a state mandated, county administered agency dedicated to providing accurate, timely, and thorough death investigations for families of the deceased, law enforcement, and the general public as outlined by Florida Statute 406. We seek to determine the cause and manner of death under certain circumstances such as homicides, suicides, accidental deaths, traffic fatalities, suspicious deaths, infant deaths, and others.
The newly selected Forensic Technician will perform technical duties in support of investigations into the cause and manner of death. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Documents distinguishing characteristics
- Completes radiographic examinations of decedents.
- Fingerprint decedents.
- Assist with autopsies, including the eviscerating of decedents.
- Releases decedent remains to appropriate recipients.
- Maintains proper chain of custody.
- Maintains evidence room.
- Maintains a full-time presence on the job.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma or equivalent recognized certification.
- Requires a minimum of one (1) year of experience demonstrating knowledge and understanding of the basic principles of forensic science. The required experience may be obtained through the completion of an apprenticeship or internship.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license and any other endorsements necessary to legally operate vehicles used while assigned to this position.
- Must possess good interpersonal and communication skills to serve others.
- Must be able to comprehend, speak and write the English language.
- Must be able to operate a computer.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS
- Knowledge of autopsy principles and practices.
- Knowledge of radiological examination.
- Knowledge of fingerprinting techniques.
- Knowledge of chain of custody laws and regulations.
- Knowledge of evidence handling and packaging principles.
- Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.
- Knowledge of forensic photography.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS
- Working Conditions may include some exposure to environmental changes (e.g., outdoor weather and/or field conditions, warehouses, garages, etc.), extreme noises, odors, heights and/or dust.·
- Risk/Safety Conditions: This position may require the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and may include completing and successfully passing medical evaluations or clearances.
- Physical Activity may include sitting, walking, lifting heavy objects up to 50lbs, kneeling, crouching, reaching, or standing.try
