Job Description

To provide independent credit risk leadership and transaction support for Natural Resources financing opportunities across South Africa and the broader African continent. The role works closely with Coverage, Product and Transaction teams during the origination, structuring and execution of transactions to ensure that key risks are identified early, properly assessed and appropriately mitigated.

The incumbent will play an important role in shaping transactions before formal credit submission by providing clear risk insight, challenging proposed structures and assumptions, and influencing outcomes that are aligned with the Bank’s risk appetite and strategic objectives. The role requires close engagement with internal and external stakeholders, including clients, sponsors, advisers and transaction teams, to support sustainable financing solutions while preserving credit quality and portfolio integrity.

As a subject matter expert within Natural Resources, the incumbent will provide informed credit input on sector trends, emerging risks, commodity markets, operating environments and industry developments across the relevant geographies. The role is expected to support high-quality credit decision-making through robust analysis, sound judgement and well-reasoned recommendations that ensure transactions are appropriately structured and capable of delivering acceptable risk-adjusted returns. This includes the review of term sheets, legal agreements, security and transaction documents to ensure risks are appropriately identified, mitigated and documented.

This role works closely with Environmental, Governance and Social Risk advisory to identify and assess ESG risks associated with transactions and ensure alignment with Bank policy, sector appetite and sustainability objectives.

The incumbent will lead the presentation and discussion of transactions at Credit Committees and other senior approval forums, providing clear recommendations supported by robust analysis and balanced risk assessment.

In this role the incumbent will originate credit applications for new transactions and when necessary, prepare or evaluate annual review credit applications, ensuring transactions remain aligned with the Bank's risk appetite, policy requirements and strategic objectives. The incumbent to provide coaching, technical guidance and leadership to less experienced credit professionals, contributing to capability development across the Natural Resources credit team.

Success in the role will be measured by the quality of credit risk assessment, the strength of risk challenge, the ability to influence transaction outcomes, and the contribution made to growing a sustainable, well-managed and resilient Natural Resources credit portfolio.

Field of Study: Business Commerce, Finance, Accounting, Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related discipline.

Professional Qualifications:

Preference will be given to candidates holding a CA(SA), CFA, FRM, or other relevant professional qualification demonstrating advanced expertise in financial analysis, risk assessment, and transaction evaluation.

Experience Required

8 to 10 years’ experience in credit risk, preferably with meaningful exposure to the Natural Resources sector, including mining and metals, oil and gas, or related sectors. A strong track record of working on new, complex and structured transactions across South Africa and the broader African continent is required. Experience in project finance, corporate lending, global market derivative products, leveraged finance, trade finance, or diversified industrials would be advantageous.

Well-developed knowledge of financial markets, commodity markets, macroeconomic trends, and the regional geographies in which the portfolio operates. The incumbent should be able to assess sector developments, country-specific risks, technical feasibility and transaction-level risks in a manner that supports sound credit decision-making.

Thorough conceptual and practical knowledge of credit procedures, credit policies, delegated authority frameworks, credit rating methodologies, Basel requirements, regulatory expectations, and compliance standards. Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
