Job Description
Grounded in safety, quality, and ethics, our experts lead their fields and guide our work with rigor, a creative spirit, and a vision for growth. We draw from more than 20 technical specialties worldwide and are committed to fostering an inclusive community of diverse talents, backgrounds, and expertise. We’re a place to apply your passion and collaborate with top environmental talents on work critical to our clients and the communities they support. Join a team that has the environment down to a science.
Your Opportunity
We are looking for an Intermediate Geoscientist/Geomorphologist to join our Fort Collins, Colorado office. We may consider another Stantec office that aligns with our business needs. You will join a global team of specialists working to reduce geohazard impacts, support resilient infrastructure, and help protect communities. This position is intended for a developing technical professional who can independently deliver defined analyses and field assignments while working under the guidance of senior specialists and contributing to the development of junior staff.
The Geohazards and Geomorphology team at Stantec:
- Conducts field mapping and investigations of hillslope, fluvial, coastal, karst, and tectonic geomorphology and geohazards.
- Interprets aerial imagery, satellite data, InSAR, LiDAR, and UAV data to assess and monitor critical infrastructure and communities.
- Collects, processes, and analyzes high-resolution data terrain data
- Models hillslope and channel processes and sediment transport to inform risk mitigation and engineering design.
- Assesses pre- and post-wildfire debris flows, debris floods, and related hazards and risks.
- Completes landslide inventory mapping, probability-of-failure assessments, and quantitative hazard and risk analyses.
- Develops engineering geological and geomorphic models based on desktop and field analyses to inform present and future conditions.
- Collaborates across disciplines, including hydrotechnical, geotechnical, civil, and environmental engineering, geomatics, GIS, archaeology, and biology.
Your Duties
In this intermediate-level technical role, you will work with senior specialists, project managers, and multidisciplinary teams. You can reasonably be expected to:
- Conduct desktop and field-based geomorphological, terrain, landslide, fluvial, and geohazard assessments.
- Prepare geomorphic and terrain maps, landslide inventories, conceptual site models, and defensible interpretations of landscape processes.
- Model natural hazard phenomena such as landslides, rockfall, debris avalanches, debris flows, debris floods, sediment transport, and floods using appropriate industry software.
- Compile, manage, analyze, and visualize spatial and remotely sensed data in ArcGIS Pro.
- Collect, process and interpret imagery, LiDAR, InSAR, UAV, and structure-from-motion datasets.
- Plan and lead defined field assignments, including logistics, safety coordination, data collection, and field documentation.
- Travel to project sites, including remote locations; short interstate trips of approximately 7 to 14 days are not uncommon.
- Prepare technical memoranda, reports, figures, scopes, cost estimates, and other project deliverables with clear assumptions and limitations.
- Complete assigned work within established scope, schedule, budget, quality, and regulatory requirements.
- Coordinate with project managers regarding workload, progress, technical issues, scope changes, and potential additional services.
- Provide day-to-day technical guidance to junior staff and collaborate with senior practitioners and subject matter experts.
- Support proposal preparation, business development, and client communications.
- Maintain accurate project and time records and submit them as required.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
The successful candidate should possess the following qualifications:
- Approximately 4 to 7 years of relevant professional experience in geomorphology, geology, engineering geology, geohazards, or related field.
- Demonstrated understanding of geomorphology with experience focused on slope, river, sediment transfer, or related Earth-surface processes.
- Experience conducting field programs and interpreting geomorphic landscapes, materials, landforms, and active processes.
- Demonstrated experience with geomorphological, terrain, or geohazard mapping methods.
- Practical experience with, or a demonstrated interest in learning, numerical modeling of geomorphic processes using software such as RAMMS, HEC-RAS, FLO-2D, DebrisFlow Predictor, D-Claw, or comparable platforms.
- Demonstrated proficiency with ArcGIS Pro.
- Experience managing, processing, and analyzing large spatial datasets, which may include LiDAR, InSAR, UAV imagery, and structure-from-motion point clouds.
- A Part 107 license or interest in acquiring this license immediately upon hiring would be beneficial in the selection of a candidate.
- Practical experience with integrating AI approaches in geoscientific data collection and analysis.
- Familiarity with the geotechnical properties of soil and rock.
- Registered as, or eligible to register as, a Professional Geologist in a U.S. state within a reasonable timeframe upon being hired.
- Ability to communicate technical findings clearly through concise writing, figures, presentations, and collaboration.
- Ability to work independently on defined tasks and effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
- Willingness to travel, participate in remote fieldwork, and adapt to changing field conditions.
- Ability to hike and work in rugged terrain and variable weather conditions.
- Fluency in English.
- Must have a valid driver's license and a clean MVR.
Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
A master’s degree in geomorphology, physical geography, geology, engineering geology, or a related field is preferred. A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field combined with demonstrated training and experience that meets the requirements above will be considered. The typical office environment includes working with computers and remaining sedentary for extended periods. Fieldwork may include travel, hiking over rugged terrain, and exposure to inclement weather and other variable site conditions.
