Position Description
The Financial Systems Engineer will sit at the intersection of financial operations, fund finance, and applied AI engineering. The role embeds directly with the CFO and finance leadership to convert the firm’s core financial workflows into AI-engineered automations and scalable financial products - working across fund operations, reporting, and infrastructure as the firm scales toward $10 billion+ in assets under management.
This is a hands-on, high-impact position that requires both engineering depth and financial services fluency. The Financial Systems Engineer will be expected to understand how a private investment firm runs - funds, investors, deals, portfolio companies - and to translate that understanding into working technical solutions. The role operates at the senior end of the finance function and collaborates closely with enterprise, technology, and internal engineering teams.
- Analyze fund management and finance operations workflows end-to-end to identify and prioritize high-value opportunities for AI-driven automation and process redesign
- Partner with the CFO and finance unit to architect and build the firm’s financial technology infrastructure — automated reporting pipelines, fund data systems, and AI-assisted financial tooling
- Design, prototype, and deploy AI-engineered automations and financial products; translate finance requirements into technical specifications and engineering outputs into finance-ready solutions
- Collaborate with internal enterprise, technology, and engineering teams to integrate financial tooling into the firm’s broader technology stack and data architecture
- Operate as the bridge between finance stakeholders and engineering execution — presenting solutions clearly to non-technical leadership and documenting decisions for team-wide adoption
- Establish repeatable frameworks for evaluating, implementing, and maintaining financial automations; document workflows, system architecture, and AI tooling decisions
- Add value to other aspects of Star Mountain’s overall business as an aligned partner assisting in building a leading private investment business, including designing and building integrated systems across the platform, from fund operations and investor reporting to deal, portfolio, and data workflows, so that tools, data, and processes connect seamlessly and scale with the firm’s growth
Qualifications
- 1–3 years of full-time experience combining engineering and financial services — backgrounds in banking, management consulting, fintech, or private equity all considered; recent graduates with strong technical credentials and finance exposure encouraged to apply
- Demonstrated ability to build and ship software in production environments, with hands-on experience in data pipelines, APIs, or workflow automation
- Finance fluency sufficient to see the connections: understanding of how a private investment firm operates — funds, investors, deals, portfolio companies — without requiring advanced investment training
- Engineering background required: degree or demonstrated proficiency in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a comparable quantitative field
- Working command of Python or equivalent; comfort with structured data manipulation, automation tooling, and system integration
- Familiarity with AI/ML frameworks or LLM-based tooling; applied experience building with or deploying AI systems strongly preferred
- Ability to design systems that are documented, maintainable, and scalable beyond the individual contributor
- Exceptional attention to detail — the role’s outputs must be trusted by finance leadership without re-checking
- Comfortable operating in ambiguity and building structure where none exists; this role and its scope are being defined in real time
- Clear written and verbal communication; comfort presenting technical work to senior finance and executive stakeholders
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple workstreams, competing priorities, and defined delivery standards simultaneously
- Discretion and sound judgment handling confidential fund, investor, and financial information
- Team player with a positive, solutions-based attitude and a strong work ethic; strong culture carrier
- Location: New York, NY or Tampa, FL
