The posting

The Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting Shared Resource (FCCSSR) at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is seeking a motivated, personable, and service-oriented researcher to join our team during a period of growth and organizational transformation. Under the leadership of Dr. Daniel Vocelle, Director of the FCCSSR, our team is rebuilding and strengthening a comprehensive shared resource dedicated to providing exceptional scientific support and customer service to researchers across the institution.

Our facility currently houses 25 instruments, with several major additions planned, including a BD FACSDiscover S8, BD FACSDiscover A8, and a second Thermo Fisher Bigfoot cell sorter. This position offers the opportunity to develop expertise in advanced scientific instrumentation, cell sorting, flow cytometry, experimental troubleshooting, and data analysis while working directly with researchers from a wide range of scientific backgrounds. Previous flow cytometry experience is not required, as technical training will be provided.

Above all, we are looking for someone who genuinely enjoys helping others succeed. The ideal candidate will be approachable, patient, dependable, and committed to delivering an exceptional customer experience. Strong communication skills, a positive attitude, and the ability to navigate challenging situations with professionalism and empathy are essential. We value individuals who take ownership of problems, follow through on commitments, and recognize that building trust and positive relationships with researchers is just as important as technical expertise. This is an opportunity to help shape a supportive, service-focused team culture while contributing to the life-saving research conducted at St. Jude.

Previous flow cytometry experience is not required. We welcome candidates from a broad range of scientific backgrounds who demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, scientific curiosity, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn. Comprehensive technical training will be provided.

As our team continues to rebuild and strengthen its operations, this position offers an opportunity to develop specialized scientific expertise while helping establish a responsive, reliable, and supportive shared resource that enables the life-saving research conducted at St. Jude.

Additional Job Responsibilities

  • Provide exceptional customer service to researchers, demonstrating patience, empathy, professionalism, and a genuine commitment to helping others succeed.
  • Work directly with researchers to understand experimental needs, communicate expectations, and provide responsive assistance throughout their experience with the facility.
  • Learn to operate and maintain advanced flow cytometry instruments, perform cell sorting services, and assist with experimental setup, sample preparation, and troubleshooting.
  • Support the daily operations of the shared resource, including instrument quality control, maintenance, scheduling coordination, and service documentation.
  • Assist in training researchers on instrument operation, experimental best practices, and data analysis as technical proficiency develops.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of facility services, workflows, training resources, and the overall researcher experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated commitment to customer service, including responsiveness, reliability, patience, and the ability to build positive working relationships.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse scientific and professional backgrounds.
  • Experience in a customer-facing, service-oriented, or collaborative support role, whether in a scientific or non-scientific environment.
  • Ability to navigate challenging interactions professionally, manage competing priorities, and approach problems with a constructive, solution-oriented mindset.
  • Experience with laboratory research, cell biology, immunology, molecular biology, or related scientific techniques is preferred.
  • Previous flow cytometry experience is beneficial but not required.

Professional Development

The FCCSSR provides structured, hands-on training in flow cytometry, cell sorting, instrument troubleshooting, and data analysis. Team members have opportunities to develop specialized expertise across a diverse instrumentation portfolio, participate in continuing education, and progressively take on additional technical and operational responsibilities. As the facility continues to grow, team members will also have opportunities to contribute to improving services, developing training programs, and strengthening the facility's collaborative culture.

Minimum Education and/or Training:

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant scientific area is required

Minimum Experience:

  • no experience required

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
