Job Description

The HR Manager – Mission Critical serves as a dedicated, project-focused human resources partner for mission critical construction teams operating across STO Building Group East business units. This highly visible role provides responsive, practical HR support in the field, helping project leaders and employees navigate the full range of day-to-day people needs in a fast-paced, geographically dispersed environment.

With approximately 60% travel, the HR Manager will spend significant time at mission critical project sites, building trusted relationships and delivering a consistent employee experience. The role will lead onsite onboarding support and serve as the first point of contact for general HR matters, partnering with business-unit HR teams and other internal resources to resolve issues efficiently and align support with company practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary HR point of contact for employees and leaders assigned to mission critical projects across STO Building Group East business units.
  • Provide onsite onboarding support, including new-hire coordination, orientation, required documentation, introductions, and connection to project and company resources.
  • Deliver first-line HR generalist support for employee questions, workplace concerns, policies, benefits, leave, performance management, and other employment-related matters.
  • Build strong relationships with project executives, operational leaders, and field teams to understand workforce needs and provide timely, practical guidance.
  • Partner with business-unit HR teams to ensure appropriate escalation, consistent practices, and effective resolution of employee matters.
  • Support employee relations matters by gathering information, documenting concerns, advising leaders, and coordinating next steps with the appropriate HR partners.
  • Coach managers on performance expectations, feedback, documentation, employee development, and effective people-management practices.
  • Conduct regular check-ins with employees and project leaders to assess engagement, address concerns, identify development needs, and follow up on action items.
  • Coordinate and support the performance review process for mission critical project employees, including goal setting, review-cycle communications, manager guidance, timely completion, and development planning.
  • Help foster an inclusive, respectful, and engaging project-site culture that reflects the organization’s values and supports employee retention.
  • Coordinate HR activities for project mobilization, workforce transitions, transfers, and project closeout.
  • Maintain accurate and timely HR records and support compliance with company policies and applicable employment requirements.
  • Identify trends and recurring workforce needs across project sites and recommend practical improvements to HR programs, communications, and processes.
  • Travel regularly to active mission critical project locations, with travel expected to average approximately 60% and vary based on project needs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Progressive HR generalist experience supporting leaders and employees in a multi-site, field-based, construction, engineering, or similarly fast-paced environment.
  • Working knowledge of core HR practices, including onboarding, employee relations, performance management, leave administration, policy interpretation, and employment compliance.
  • Demonstrated ability to build credibility with operational leaders and employees at all levels.
  • Strong judgment, discretion, and confidence handling sensitive and confidential information.
  • Excellent communication, organization, follow-through, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and remain responsive while traveling between project locations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and experience working with HR information systems (Oracle).
  • Ability and willingness to travel approximately 60%, including overnight travel as project needs require.
  • Professional HR certification is preferred.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
