The posting

STV is seeking a highly experienced Senior Signals Engineering Specialist to join our Systems team. This position will serve as a senior technical resource supporting the planning, design, integration, testing, and implementation of complex railway and transit signal systems.

The ideal candidate will bring a minimum of 12 years of progressive experience in rail and/or transit signaling, with strong technical knowledge of signal system design, train control, system integration, and applicable industry standards. The Senior Signals Engineering Specialist will provide technical leadership across multidisciplinary projects, support and mentor engineering staff, interface directly with clients and project stakeholders, and help ensure signaling solutions are safe, reliable, constructible, and compliant with project requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as a senior technical specialist for rail and transit signal systems throughout planning, design, construction, testing, and commissioning phases.
  • Develop, review, and provide technical oversight of signal system designs, drawings, specifications, calculations, and other engineering documentation.
  • Support the design and implementation of conventional and advanced signaling and train control technologies, as applicable to project requirements.
  • Review signal plans, control tables, route and aspect information, circuit designs, interface requirements, equipment layouts, and associated design documentation.
  • Lead or support technical evaluations of existing signal infrastructure and development of rehabilitation, modernization, and replacement strategies.
  • Provide technical leadership for signal system integration, including interfaces with communications, traction power, vehicles, track, civil, electrical, operations, and other railway systems.
  • Participate in design reviews at key project milestones and identify technical risks, interface issues, constructability concerns, and potential design conflicts.
  • Support development and review of technical specifications, design criteria, system requirements, interface documentation, testing procedures, and commissioning plans.
  • Provide engineering support during construction, installation, testing, cutover, and commissioning activities.
  • Review contractor and supplier submittals for compliance with contract requirements, design criteria, and applicable standards.
  • Participate in factory and field testing activities, including system verification and validation efforts.
  • Support troubleshooting and resolution of complex signal and train-control system issues.
  • Coordinate closely with clients, transit and railroad agencies, contractors, suppliers, and internal multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior and mid-level signal engineers and specialists.
  • Support project managers with technical scope development, level-of-effort estimates, schedules, risk identification, and technical deliverables.
  • Participate in client meetings and technical presentations and represent the Systems team as a subject-matter expert in railway signaling.
  • Support proposals, pursuits, and business-development activities by providing technical expertise, project approaches, and scope development.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • Minimum of 12 years of progressively responsible experience in railway, freight rail, commuter rail, and/or transit signal engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience with the design, integration, testing, commissioning, or modernization of railway signal and train-control systems.
  • Strong understanding of signal system principles, architecture, interfaces, operational requirements, and safety considerations.
  • Experience preparing and/or reviewing signal engineering drawings, technical specifications, design calculations, system requirements, and related engineering documentation.
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating signal systems with other railway disciplines and subsystems.
  • Experience working through multiple phases of the project lifecycle, from concept and preliminary engineering through final design, construction, testing, and commissioning.
  • Ability to independently review complex engineering designs and identify technical risks and interface issues.
  • Strong technical problem-solving and engineering judgment.
  • Ability to lead technical discussions with clients, contractors, suppliers, and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple technical assignments while maintaining quality, schedule, and project requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with major transit agencies, commuter railroads, freight railroads, or public transportation authorities.
  • Experience with CBTC, PTC, interlocking systems, wayside signaling, automatic train control, or other modern train-control technologies.
  • Familiarity with applicable AREMA, IEEE, FRA, FTA, NFPA, and agency-specific requirements, as relevant to assigned projects.
  • Experience with signal system Verification & Validation (V&V), Systems Assurance, Safety Certification, and/or RAMS-related activities.
  • Experience supporting system cutovers, field testing, commissioning, and revenue-service implementation.
  • Experience serving as a technical lead, discipline lead, or signal subject-matter expert on major transportation projects.
  • Previous experience mentoring and developing engineers and technical staff.
  • Experience developing technical scopes, estimates, proposals, and project work plans.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
