About the Role

The Assistant Cook at Marshall Parkside Elementary plays a vital role in supporting the preparation and delivery of nutritious meals to students and staff, ensuring a positive dining experience. This position involves assisting with food preparation, maintaining cleanliness and organization in the kitchen, and adhering strictly to food safety standards. The Assistant Cook collaborates closely with the kitchen team to execute menu plans efficiently while accommodating dietary restrictions and preferences. This role contributes to the overall success of the food service operation by ensuring timely meal service and minimizing waste. Ultimately, the Assistant Cook helps foster a safe, welcoming, and efficient kitchen environment that supports the health and well-being of the school community.

Job Responsibilities

Assist in the preparation and cooking of meals according to established recipes and menu plans.Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of kitchen equipment, utensils, and work areas in compliance with food safety regulations.Support inventory management by receiving, storing, and rotating food supplies to ensure freshness and reduce waste.Collaborate with the kitchen team to ensure meals are prepared and served on schedule.Adhere to all food safety and hygiene standards to prevent contamination and ensure the health of all consumers.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.Basic knowledge of food service operations and food safety practices.Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team.Physical ability to stand for extended periods and perform kitchen tasks including lifting and carrying supplies.Valid food handler’s certification or willingness to obtain one upon hire.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience working in a school or institutional kitchen setting.Familiarity with menu planning and accommodating special dietary needs.Additional food safety certifications such as ServSafe.Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.Ability to communicate effectively with team members and school staff.

The required skills in food service and food safety are applied daily to ensure that all meals are prepared in a hygienic and efficient manner, meeting the nutritional needs of students. Knowledge of food service operations helps the Assistant Cook understand kitchen workflows and contribute to smooth meal service. Menu planning skills assist in following recipes accurately and adapting to any changes or special requests. Food safety expertise is critical to maintaining a clean environment and preventing foodborne illnesses. Preferred skills such as experience with special dietary accommodations and strong communication enhance collaboration with the kitchen team and school staff, ensuring a positive and inclusive dining experience.
