The posting
The Senior Business Manager leads the commercial performance and long-term growth of a substantial, complex customer portfolio in Tandem Foods’ co-manufacturing business. The role combines customer leadership, product and pricing strategy, financial analysis, and cross-functional execution to grow revenue, protect customer share, and improve profitability.
Serving as a senior commercial individual contributor, this role independently develops portfolio strategies and resolves complex customer issues with limited leadership guidance. Assigned customers typically include large consumer packaged goods organizations with multiple brands, concurrent development projects, and demanding commercial and operational requirements. Success requires deep commercial expertise, sound judgment, and influence across customer and internal decision makers.
Key Responsibilities:
Portfolio Strategy and Customer Leadership
- Develop and drive annual and multiyear customer business plans, translating company objectives into prioritized growth, product portfolio, retention, and profitability initiatives.
- Identify and evaluate business expansion, new products, and portfolio optimization opportunities. Build financial and commercial business cases, recommend tradeoffs, and secure leadership approval through established governance processes.
- Lead relationships with customer commercial and functional decision makers, independently navigating complex organizations and resolving sensitive or ambiguous business issues.
- Lead quarterly business reviews, annual planning discussions, and customer RFP responses, presenting recommendations that connect customer needs with Tandem’s capabilities and financial objectives.
Pricing Negotiation and Financial Performance
- Own portfolio revenue and margin performance against agreed plans; analyze account profitability, explain performance gaps, and drive corrective actions with Finance and functional partners.
- Develop customer pricing strategies and proposals using cost, volume, product mix, capacity, and profitability analysis. Recommend commercial structures that support sustainable growth and protect margins.
- Develop negotiation strategies and lead customer discussions on pricing, business expansion, and multiyear agreements within leadership-approved parameters. Obtain approval for final commitments and exceptions under company policies.
- Evaluate customer capital investment opportunities with Finance and Operations, assessing commercial returns, demand assumptions, risks, and alternatives before recommending investments to leadership.
Complex Programs and Customer Onboarding
- Lead the commercial direction and prioritization of multiple concurrent customer initiatives across brands and products, balancing revenue potential, margin, customer commitments, capacity, and execution risk.
- Align Sales, Operations, Supply Chain, R&D, Finance, and Commercialization partners around project objectives and commitments through influence and commercial expertise.
- Drive initiatives through stage-gate reviews, resolve competing priorities, and develop recommendations for issues requiring leadership decisions. Maintain clear ownership, milestones, and handoffs to commercialization for launch execution.
- Partner with Business Development to onboard complex new customers, translating negotiated requirements into coordinated commercial, operational, and launch plans.
Planning Problem Solving and Commercial Expertise
- Lead customer demand planning across near-term and long-term horizons; challenge assumptions and align forecasts with Supply Planning, production capacity, inventory, and financial plans.
- Independently assess complex supply, production, inventory, and delivery issues; develop solutions with functional partners and negotiate customer expectations within approved commitments. Escalate material financial, contractual, or operational risks with recommended actions.
- Use revenue, volume, margin, forecast accuracy, and operating performance data to guide portfolio decisions and contribute to annual budgets and commercial planning.
- Apply lessons from complex accounts and negotiations to recommend improvements in pricing approaches, customer planning, onboarding, and commercial practices across the Business Management team. Share expertise with colleagues on difficult customer and commercial issues.
Decision Making and Accountability
- Sets the approach, priorities, and recommended commercial direction for the assigned portfolio with limited day-to-day oversight.
- Leads customer negotiations within approved parameters and is accountable for commercial analysis, recommendations, execution, and portfolio results.
- Senior leadership retains final approval of contracts, major investments, and stage-gate decisions.
