Kingsbury School

Head of Year

TMS/UPS + TLR2b (£6,106)

Permanent | Full-time | January 2027

Science or Technology specialism

Lead a year group. Set the standard. Make a difference.

This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious and highly motivated teacher to join Kingsbury School as a Head of Year from January 2027.

We are looking for a highly visible and ambitious leader who believes that excellent attendance, high standards, a strong sense of belonging and positive relationships with families are the foundations of student success.

This role would suit an existing pastoral leader looking for a new challenge or an aspiring leader ready to take the next step in their career. What matters most to us is your ability to build relationships, establish high expectations and be relentless in helping young people succeed.

Due to our curriculum requirements, applicants should be able to teach Science or any discipline within Technology, including Design and Technology, Food Technology, Engineering, Graphics or Art Textiles.

Our core purpose is to Enthuse | Aspire | Achieve. We are a rapidly developing school with high expectations, a strong sense of community and a clear ambition for every student to succeed. Our values of Respect, Kindness, Honesty, Ambition and Pride underpin everything we do.

About the role

As Head of Year, you will provide leadership for a year group, ensuring that every student is known, supported and challenged to achieve their very best.

You will be a highly visible presence throughout the school and will lead the development of a positive year-group culture characterised by excellent attendance and punctuality, high standards of behaviour and uniform, positive attitudes to learning and a genuine sense of belonging.

Working alongside our pastoral, attendance, safeguarding, SEND and inclusion teams, you will identify barriers to success and ensure that students receive the right challenge, intervention and support.

You will also lead and support your team of tutors, quality assure the tutor programme and ensure that tutor time makes a meaningful contribution to attendance, personal development, school culture and student achievement.

This is a role where relationships matter. You will know your students, celebrate their successes, challenge them when standards fall and develop strong, productive relationships with parents and carers.

Making an impact

Our Heads of Year are leaders of culture and achievement, not simply managers of pastoral issues.

You will have a particular responsibility for:

 driving improvements in attendance and punctuality, using data and targeted intervention to make a measurable difference;

 establishing consistently high expectations for behaviour, uniform, equipment and attitudes to learning;

 creating a positive year-group identity in which students feel that they belong and are valued;

 leading a strong culture of recognition and reward, celebrating attendance, achievement, effort and the demonstration of our school values;

 leading, supporting and developing a team of tutors;

 building strong relationships with parents and carers;

 monitoring academic progress and working with curriculum leaders to identify and address underachievement;

 working collaboratively with safeguarding, SEND and inclusion colleagues to remove barriers to learning.

This role could be for you if you:

 are an excellent classroom teacher of Science or Technology;

 are an aspiring or existing leader ready for your next professional challenge;

 have high expectations and the confidence to challenge poor standards while maintaining positive relationships;

 believe passionately in the importance of excellent attendance;

 can inspire, motivate and build strong relationships with young people;

 understand that excellent pastoral leadership and high academic expectations go hand in hand;

 can use information and data intelligently to identify students who need additional challenge or support;

 communicate confidently and professionally with parents and carers;

 are visible, approachable, resilient and solution-focused;

 are ambitious for every student, including disadvantaged students and those with SEND.

The person specification particularly emphasises the ability to build positive relationships while challenging poor standards, use data effectively, lead and motivate colleagues and manage difficult conversations professionally.

Develop as a leader

You don't need to arrive as the finished product.

If you have the potential, ambition and commitment to lead, we will invest in you.

You will benefit from a strong programme of leadership development and professional growth, with opportunities to develop your expertise in pastoral leadership, attendance, behaviour, inclusion and school improvement.

You will work closely with senior and pastoral leaders at Kingsbury and have opportunities to learn from colleagues across Castle Phoenix Academy Trust.

For someone with aspirations towards future senior leadership, this role provides an excellent opportunity to demonstrate impact across a significant area of school life.

Why Kingsbury?

We want our teachers and leaders to be able to concentrate on what matters most: knowing our students, teaching them well and helping them succeed.

At Kingsbury you will find:

 a positive and supportive staff culture;

 clear whole-school expectations for behaviour, attendance and standards;

 established pastoral and attendance teams working alongside Heads of Year;

 a strong culture of rewards, recognition and celebration;

 a comprehensive programme of professional development and professional growth;

 genuine opportunities for leadership development and future career progression;

 a school-wide commitment to high-quality, inclusive teaching;

 an iPad for every member of teaching staff, with mirroring to classroom screens;

 strong administrative support;

 free on-site parking and a range of Trust employee benefits, including cycle to work, employee discounts and access to Westfield Health.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
